4. We have NOT won yet!
There may still be a recount in Virginia, Montana is still close in a heavily red state, and you never know what Lieberman is going to do.

DON'T relax yet!

7. How do you figure?
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 03:00 AM by Scooter24
The two Independents have already come out and said they will caucus with the Democrats...If we take MT and VA, that gives us a 51-49 advantage. We would also become the majority party.

9. they can say they will caucus with us, but that's no guarantee
It's obviously no guarantee that all Dems will vote with us too, but you are willing to believe Lieberman will always vote against the R's after they helped him win?

12. Hey AZ, it doesn't MATTER
because Lieberman will vote for Reid, and that's what matters.

13. There seems to be some confusion about what it means to "take the
Senate" here in this thread. Taking the Senate means that we have the majority at the time of organization. This means voting in the Majority Leader and other leadership positions. It also mean having the Dems as Committee Chairs and each committee organized with a majority of DEM votes. It's a huge advantage that we haven't had for more than a decade.

After that it doesn't matter how the individual members vote. That's just the Senate which is quite quirky, pompous, and self important. It Lieberman, Nelson and others want to vote one way on Iraq, then they do. Or on anotheer vote they join the majority and some GOP to vote for stem cell reasearch, then they do. Etc, etc.

But you need to ORGANIZE as the majority to get all these goodies and it is pretty certain that Bernie and Lieberman will join the Dems in that organization ("caucusing with the Dems").

As a side note to this "civics summary", I should note that it was far, far more important to take the House. I'm glad to have both but would chose the House if I could only have one.
