Pelosi Announces Opening Session of the 110th Congress
http://www.democraticleader.house.gov

Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi announced today that the House of Representatives will open the first session of the 110 th Congress on January 4,2007 and will remain in session for several weeks in January to take up crucial legislation that will address the urgent priorities of the American People.

"From economic security to national security. the American people have resoundingly called for a New Direction. It is imperative that we waste no time in addressing the pressing needs facing our nation," Pelosi said."In the first 100 legislative hours, Democrats will get to work immediately to restore civility, integrity, and fiscal responsibility to the House, while increasing prosperity, opportunity, and security for all Americans."
Included in House Democrats'first 100 legislative hours are:

1- Draining the swamp- break the link between lobbyist and legislation and commit to pay-as-you-go budgeting, no new deficit spending.
2-Making America more secure- implement the independent 9/11 Commission recommendations.
3- Giving Americans a raise- increase the minimum wage.
4- Making college more affordable- cut the interest rate in half on federally subsidized student loans.
5- Making health care more affordable- negotiate for lower prescription drug prices.
6- Ending subsidies for Big Oil.
7- Giving hope to families with devastating diseases- allow stem cell research.

11. Are they talking about investigations?
My mother was telling me that Pelosi and other Democratic leaderships have decided not to run investigations. I know Pelosi had said that impeachment is off the table but it would be crazy if they don't even consider investigations and perhaps some sort of conviction against BushCo.

Can someone please verify this?

15. investigations
No one's talking about it, because to do so would make Democratic leadership appear bent on revenge and not focused on bringing the country forward. You can't just pretend that the last 6 years has not happened, however and I guess most people assume that investigations will start soon.

16. I would certainly hope so...
Bush and his administration has done alot of unthinkable things in the past 6 years so I do hope that the Dem leadership will start investigations in its tenure and probably lead up to impeachment.

Perhaps Pelosi is just saying that impeachment is off the table at this time, but probably will bring it up later.

3. Argue the priorities all you want--that agenda is pro-American all the way.
In your honor, Madame Speaker:

Now, there was a time
when they used to say
that behind ev'ry great man,
there had to be a great woman.
But oh, in these times of change,
you know that it's no longer true.
So we're comin' out of the kitchen,
'cause there's something we forgot to say to you.
We say, Sisters are doin' it for themselves,
standin' on their own two feet
and ringin' on their own bells.
We say, Sisters are doin' it
for themselves.
Now, this is a song to celebrate
the conscious liberation of the female state.
Mothers, daughters,
and their daughters too, woh yeah,
woman to woman,
we're singing with you, ooh, ooh.
The "inferior sex" has got a new exterior.
We got doctors, lawyers, politicians too,
ooh ooh ooh, ooh.
Ev'rybody, take a look around.
Can you see, can you see, can you see,
there's a woman right next to youou.
We say, Sisters are doin' it for themselves,
standin' on their own two feet
and ringin' on their own bells.
Sisters are doin' it
for themselves.
Now we ain't makin' stories,
and we ain't layin' plans.
Don't you know that a man still loves a woman,
and a woman still loves a man
just the same, though.
Ooh ooh ooh
ooh ooh ooh ooh.
Sisters are doin' it
for themselves.
There was a time,
oh, when they used to say
that behind ev'ry great man,
there had to be a great woman.
In these times of change,
you know that it's no longer true.
So we're comin' out of the kitchen,
'cause there's something we forgot to say to you.
We say, Sisters are doin' it for themselves,
standin' on their own two feet
and ringin' on their own bells.
Sisters are doin' it
for themselves.
Sisters are doin' it
for themselvesselves.
Sisters are doin' it, doin' it,
doin' it, doin' it, doin' it, doin' it…
Sisters are doin' it for themselves,
uhhuh, uhhuh, yeah.
Sisters are doin' it for themselves,
uhhuh, uhhuh, uhhuh, yeah.
Sisters are doin' it
for themselves.
I say, yeah, yeah,
Sisters are doin' it for themselves,
standin' on their…
Sisters are doin' it
for themselves.

6. Whoa, hope the Republicans can keep up
How many legislative days did the Rubber Stamp Congress convene? 94 or so? They'd better be ready to meet that many days by Easter this year. I notice that the outgoing Congress, lazy to the last, will leave a whole batch of budget bills in the hopper for the next Congress to have to consider and pass. But maybe the GOP will be able to pass one more amendment prohibiting flag burning or some such nonsense before they slither out of town for good.

10. He already said he'd pass a raise in the minimum wage
She has already negotiated that vote with him.

Now let him veto all the rest. And his Party can go down with the ship.

12. Those are mostly sensible, doable things
The hard committment to no new deficit spending scares me a bit, but I certainly agree with the principle of fiscal responsibility.

Missing from this list is Iraq. That obviously needs to be next after this low hanging fruit is harvested. Not sure how many days 100 legislative hours translates into, but they ought not to delay too long. Also some kind of gesture towards the middle class' economic insecurity beyond college and prescription drugs is absolutely necessary. I'd like to see an dividend from Iraqi withdrawl and rolling back tax cuts to the rich paid out in the form of wage insurance available to working class and middle class Americans with children as old as 25 who are temporarily forced into a lower paying job.

13. Where's The Voter Verified Paper Trail Bill ????
What's more important than securing the most inalienable right of all???

Rove let this election go so as not to expose the suspicion everyone had, but something tells me that the voting machines will go against Dems in 2008 as the Rethugs will say the American people tried the Dem's and prefer us!

They give up two years in order to get the following four or more.

18. I think a voter verified paper *ballot* is what is needed.
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 01:01 AM by w4rma
Not a new complex system of paper "records" supposedly mirroring electronic ballots/votes.
