(OC) Senator, I know you want this to be a two-man race between you and
Senator Kerry, but you're still fighting out with General Clark in the
south and he leveled a pretty tough attack against you on the issue of
your support for veterans the other day. I want to show our viewers
what he said and get you to respond.
<1>10:40:22 GENERAL WESLEY CLARK (DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE)
Senator Edwards, as I've announced earlier today, in his approach to
veterans' affairs decided to side with supporting corporate interests at
the expense of veterans in 1999. He was the only Democrat to do so.
And what the American people sense is this Washington insider culture in
which money buys access and access gives you influence and influence
gives you special treatment under the law.
<1>10:40:50 GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) He accuses you of bowing to special interests instead of supporting
veterans.
<1>10:40:56 SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS (DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE)
Well, it's an absurd allegation. Of course I've been a strong supporter
of veterans. I have to say in fairness, so I believe have every
Democratic candidate for president. I think all of us have been strong
supporters of veterans. I have a clear, long history on this issue.
Some of these votes that he's talking about are votes where my vote was
the same as John McCain's, the same as Chuck Hagel, two of the most
distinguished veterans serving in the United States Senate. No, this is
like anything, George. He's looking for something that he can attack
on. This is what people are tired of. This is the reason my message,
my positive message is resonating with the American people.
<1>10:41:34 GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (ABC NEWS)
(OC) But it is true that on October 6th, 1999 you were the only Democrat
to vote with the Republicans on this, on this amendment which would have
prevented across-the-board cuts including veterans.
<1>10:41:45 SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS (DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE)
But, George, it was part of a bigger, you know the way these votes are.
It is part of a bigger appropriations Bill full of lots of different
things. Some of these, some of these particular provisions that the
general is talking about directly affected farmers in North Carolina,
for example. I mean, there are lots of provisions in each of these
votes. I have strongly supported veterans. I'm the person in this
presidential race who has taken the position and sponsored legislation
that would give veterans exactly the same health care benefits as
members of the United States Senate get. I know how important these
issues are. I have huge military bases, Ft. Bragg, Camp Lejeune in
North Carolina. I have lived with the problems not only of veterans but
our active duty men and women.

If this is what they were referring to (although it's not Oct 6th, it's
Sept 22nd), then Edwards lied on three counts:
1. He voted NAY.
2. McCain did not even vote on that one.
3. Chuck Hagel voted NAY.
Also Sens. Kennedy, Harkin, Kerry, Wellstone, Lieberman, Biden, Cleland
and others voted YAY.

09/22/1999
Senate Roll Call No. 285
106th Congress, 1st Session
Rejected: 36-63 (see complete tally)
During consideration of this measure today, Senate also took the
following action: By 36 yeas to 63 nays (Vote No. 285), three-fifths of
those Senators duly chosen and sworn, not having voted in the
affirmative, Senate rejected the motion to waive the Congressional
Budget Act with respect to the consideration of Wellstone Amendment No.
1747, to increase the amount appropriated for the Veterans Health
Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs by $1,300,000,000.
Subsequently, a point of order against the amendment pursuant to section
302(F) of the Congressional Budget Act was sustained, and the amendment
thus fell.
Edwards voted NAY, along with Chuck Hagel. McCain didn't vote on that one.
