Gordon Raley, who coordinates efforts with churches for Arlington-based Family Health International, said criticism of Obama revealed a shortcoming that sometimes occurs among Christians.

"Even within the church, sometimes we put politics before God," he said.

"View" bleeps Bush-bashing DeVito

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Remarks made by actor Danny DeVito's about President Bush were bleeped out during an appearance Wednesday morning on ABC's "The View."

<snip>

But it was his comments about the White House -- and its occupant -- that got him in trouble with ABC's Broadcast Standards & Practices. "View," which airs on a seven-second delay, bleeped him twice while he was talking about Bush.

During the 2004 campaign, Dean supporters were called "Deaniacs" by the corporate media. Today we see Clark supporters being portrayed as members of a cult. The same is said about supporters of other potential Democratic candidates, but the label is never applied to the Bush supporters.

There is only one cult and that is the Bush cult. In the documentary Jesus Camp young children were shown praying toward a cardboard cutout of Bush. Isn't that a cult? What if they had been praying at a cardboard cutout of Bill Clinton, wouldn't the outcry from the rightwing been deafening and gone on 24/7?

The animated feature Happy Feet about singing and dancing penguins is now being attacked by the rightwing for not sharing Bush's values about the environment, or about diversity. Had the movie shown a penguin being killed or shunned for being gay, it would have received rave reviews from the rightwing chattering class.

In the military it is strictly forbidden to say anything remotely critical of Bush. The rationale is that Bush is their Commander-in-Chief and that subordinates should not be badmouthing the chain of command. The problem with this rationale is that when Clinton or even Carter were Presidents, badmouthing the Commander-in-Chief was the sport du jour.

If someone makes any comments in public or the internet about an untimely demise to Bush or Cheney, it is a near certainty that he/she will be paid a visit by one of the goons from Homeland Security or the FBI. Yet, when clear and open threats were made by rightwingers against Democratic office holders, and even sitting Presidents, nothing happens to them.

The reason there is a Bush cult is because that 34% of the population that comprises Bush's hard core supporters don't see Bush as a mere President. They see him as someone selected by G-d to rule America according to G-d's dictates. Consequently, any criticisms of Bush or his policies are seen as an attack on G-d, and an indirect attack on his faithful followers.

So next time you hear anyone talking about a Clark cult, a Kerry cult, a Dean cult, an Obama cult, or even a Hillary cult, remember that there is only one cult: the Bush cult.

1. the cult of the owners
People work for the cult of the owners; those owners who buy political parties,
who buy inheritance tax rollbacks; who've a percentage or 2 of the world's wealth
hived away in the vatican banks.

The owners are worshipped by the whole economy, the sycophantic sellouts on the
middle and the unrequieted zealots on the right, and not to miss the apologists of
the progressive left, why nothing is progressive... but we should keep believing
it could just be around the corner and vote less evil.

It is only 1 cult, and to make it a partisan is unfair... souls have been sold
in equal measure around the planet, and the cult of mammon self serves franchise
to choose more mammon, but never less... no the cult of the owners only has 1
choice, single party statism by corporate kapital.

2. Bushbots never refer
*'s achievements or qualifications. The fact that he is a "church-going man" or someone to "have a beer with" seems to be enough.

DUers on the other hand always promote their prospective candidate's abilities, experience and knowledge.

3. me?
"Today we see Clark supporters being portrayed as members of a cult."

In reality it was me posting a topic on a message forum wondering about the growing number of Clark threads along with the mention of his name in every discussion. Not really a big deal...

4. I remember when
In an effort to bring some civility to the 03-04 discussions fights, there were rules set about name calling etc. Weren't restricted to using the candidates actual names without embellishments? As for the supporters, as I remember it, the request was to call them "supporters." As in Dean supporters....Clark supporters....

Some of that decorum has fallen away, and some of it should since it was stiffling and unnecessary.

I sorta understood what brought about the "cult" thread; nevertheless, it had no basis in fact. Three or four of those Clark threads were actually flame-bait, or responses to the original bait.

What a way to spend time. Geesh.

6. I think the GOP and the fundie opinion makers are fearful
that the Democrats will get enough votes for President in 2008 to overcome any Diebold or ES&S shenanigans. This is why they are striking so early at potential Democratic candidates. As to DU, I have my suspicions about some of those that spend more time exploiting our differences than they do in attacking the real enemy, the Bush dictatorship.

5. Thank you Indiana Green.......I agree that it takes much more than
supporting a Democratic Candidate over here at DU to be eligible for "Cult"hood or to be called out as such.

The Bush Cult is a most frightening one, because they do in fact pretty much believe the same things and have acted toward their goal in a way which goes much further than simply posting on a political forum board and the results of this Cult has truly invaded our lives in very real and reprehensive ways!

7. This is what the Bush cult has given us: a complacent press
a fearful Congress, and the loss of our liberties. I hope that the new Democratic majority will have the wherewithal to restore our system of checks and balances, and take back the powers that Bush has usurped since 9-11. I am looking forward to Biden's promise of weeks of hearing on the lead up to the Iraq War.
