My hunch is that the Repubs will stick with Bush for one more year...
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 12:24 AM by kentuck
But, come January 2008, they will desert him like rats on a sinking ship. They will not, under any circumstances, want to run another campaign defending the status quo in Iraq. Mr Bush has a small window of opportunity in which he will get the support of his Party and the support of a few Democrats as well. The writing is on the wall. He'd better show some results or even his dog, Barney, will desert him.

Politically, the Repubs can stick with Bush for a while. But they cannot stick with him in an election year if Iraq is still an issue. I seriously doubt there is going to be any quick resolution of this fiasco...

1. I agree with you
They will be with him until the next election interests take over. Then it's every man or woman for himself.

If the Dems do a good job handling Congress you may see some moderation among Republicans.

What remains to be seen is if Republicans will work with Dems to get things done, or if they will become complete obstructionists. One Senator can tie up the Senate, & derail everything.

2. I think they can't afford the distraction of replacing him in a presidential year
A lot of repubs have their eyes on the wh, not just McCain. And they aren't going to want to start a battle over who replaces chimpy as they head into an election year. They'll end up splitting their own party. My hunch is that chimpy serves out his term.

3. Hunch? He will definitely serve out his term
I don't think that's the issue in this thread, but it seems obvious that he will complete his term. The question is whether his party will abandon him in the meanwhile.

4. you're right
I may have extrapolated from the OP's post about repubs abandoning chimpy to them forcing him from office. I agree that he's going to serve out his term. As for repubs "abandoning" him, I don't think that's going to take a year ...its happening already.
