Santorum ends U.S. Senate career on positive note

Friday, December 08, 2006
By Jerome L. Sherman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

WASHINGTON -- Over the course of his 16 years in the U.S. Congress, Sen. Rick Santorum developed a reputation for being a self-described, rhetorical "bomb thrower," often pushing his way into the middle of some of the most controversial issues of the day.

Last night, the Republican senator marked the closing of his congressional career by throwing nothing but praise -- at his colleagues, his family, his staff and the people of Pennsylvania who overwhelmingly voted him out of office on Nov. 7.

"I had an opportunity to serve them. I had an opportunity to be scolded by them," he said during a half-hour Senate floor speech. "But I always understood that they were my employers; I worked for them. And when you work for somebody, sometimes they're going to tell you that they don't like the job you're doing.

"I respect the fact that I didn't win this election, and that the people of Pennsylvania made a different decision."

Earlier in the day, Mr. Santorum met with Sen.-elect Bob Casey to discuss the transition of office. He called his Democratic successor a "good man."

1. Bye Ricky! Don't come back!
This is one of the most satisfying departures ever. Only exceeded by the departure on January 20, 2009 at 12:00PM.

You can make way more money as a Lobbyist than as a government employee

16. LynneSin, doesn't that fit Melissa Fart, er, Hart much better
I LOVED seeing Jason Altmire pull the rug from under her feet. That was even more satisfying than seeing Ricky Retardo fired!

18. I just wish we had gotten rid of Jim Gerlach in PA-06
He got so amazingly slimy in the last weeks of the election that he made Santorum's campaign look clean. It would have been nice picking up five seats in the state, but four still amazed me!

11. Good bye Rick
Hope you could have left earlier. One day people will look back at the destruction you & your republican buddies brought to the US & will be thankful that they got rid of you.

15. At least the last sentence in the article is true.
Bob Casey is a good man. That sure wasn't what Ricky Retardo spit out at Casey during the debates.

It was worth borrowing $500 on my Master Card to give to Senator Casey and Congressman Altmire. It's a real pleasure knowing that my home state won't be the laughing stock of the world anymore. Senator Casey will bring a much needed dose of sanity to the Senate. Besides it's been 12 years since Pennsylvania had 2 Senators.

As for Ricky Retardo, he can go back to the WWE where he came from.

19. Did he really say
"But I always understood that they (sic: Pennsylvanians) were my employers; I worked for them ..."?

SINCE WHEN?????

His employers were his Repuke party leaders and their wealthy corporate sponsors. That and his own twisted Christian conservative agenda.

The only thing he did that I liked was his legislation for the Pet Animal Welfare Statute.

Otherwise, all I'll say about him at this point is thank God he's outta here.
