Will McCain's age be an issue in the campaign?
I wonder what DUers think about that. He'll be 72 in November 2008, which is three years older than Reagan was when he won his first term. And how would it be broached? It strikes me as kind of a sensitive subject, even if it seems to me to very relevant.

Any thoughts?

7. No, but his psychelogical problems will!
Seeing how he wants to send another huge force to Iraq for his 'victory', you would have to assume he's freakin nuts!

9. I hate to say this as someone on the wrong side of 65
but I think 72 is too old. However, my animus towards that guy runs hot and deep, so I have to question my impartiality on the issue of age in his case.

As someone who was "eased" out of a job because of age, I guess I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it was not fair and it was a part of a campaign to rid the organization of all of its 60+ females (mission accomplished at this point with all 6 women out in 18 months time).

On the other hand, my life is so much better now and my stress level is so much lower that I truly don't know how I managed to stand it at my full time job. In a way, I feel they did me a favor. Odd, but true.

11. Most people don't know his age - he looks very young for 70 plus. When people do find out his age,
it will very much be an issue. People still remember Reagan and that , obviously, his Alzheimer's had already started while he was in office.

15. I think it should be a factor, though obviously not the only one.
Given that he has had cancer in the last several years, I think it is reasonable to know what his health is. Looking at him recently, he does not look that healthy.

18. Being a two-faced Bush HO with 95% RW voting record counts, not age.
The so-called straight talk express is still fawned over by the media, and I don't know why. This RW Kerry-backstabber, campaign finance reform liar, neocon needs to be exposed over and over again.

20. It will be an issue if he makes it to the Debate stage
He will look very old...imagine all those new plasma HD TVs that many people will have. You won't be able to cake him up to hide the age.

No matter what people think otherwise, age will definitely be an issue.

21. He too is in denial about the war and the fact that there are not enough
suckers to increase the boot count to win. This alone will kill his dream of being elected. If he ups it a notch and pushes for a draft he is in more trouble.

22. He's had serious
health issues, and I strongly suspect, given his appearance these days, that they are ongoing and he's not being honest about them. I find it hard to believe he'll live another six years -- what would be required to live out a term if he's elected in 08. Every single time I see him on TV I wait for an announcement that he's got terminal something-or-another.

In short, his age and health absolutely should be an issue. And the ones who should care the most should be the Republicans who'd be thinking of nominating him.

23. Oh my god yes. He's just WAY too fucking old now, much less two years from now...
Unless you want a Soviet- or Chinese-style gerontocracy.

And then there's the question of whether he was a gay drug-abuser who beat his wife (or was it "drug-abuser who beat his gay wife" or "gay man who beat his drug-abuser wife"? I just can't keep those stories straight) and of course that illegitimate black baby he fathered, all of which the Republicans will have to accept as true -- hey, it must all be true, because George Wanker Bush said so himself. :eyes:
