Foley Panel: GOP left pages vulnerable

WASHINGTON - Republican lawmakers and aides left male pages vulnerable to Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record)'s improper sexual advances even though the first concerns surfaced more than a decade ago, the ethics committee said Friday in its report into an election-year scandal that convulsed the House.

...

The panel said it found no evidence that any current lawmakers or aides violated any rules, and recommended no sanctions in the case that cost Foley his seat in Congress and contributed to his party's defeat at the polls in last month's midterm elections.

...

After Foley resigned, Shimkus told another Republican member of the Page Board — Rep. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia — why he never informed the Democratic member of the board, Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Mich., about Foley.

Shimkus said, 'Dale's a nice guy, but he's a Democrat, and I was afraid it would be blown out of proportion."

Speaking about Republicans, the committee said it had found a "significant number of instances where members (of Congress), officers or employees fails to exercise appropriate diligence and oversight, or should have exercised greater diligence and oversight, regarding issues arising from the interaction between former Rep. Mark Foley and current or former House pages."

So... they "failed to exercise appropriate diligence and oversight," and by Shimkus's own admission did not tell the Democratic member of the page committee because he was afraid of political fallout, yet the commission "recommends no sanctions."

Now that's accountability for you. :grr: :grr: :grr:

1. Blowback
So the hyperpolarization the R's created prevented them from handling this situation, thus creating a huge scandal that helped drive them from office. Nice karma.

8. Great
Then the local grassroots needs to start finding a challenger now. Use his words against him. They are character revealing and damning.

3. There's the congressional GOP mindset in a nutshell...
Nothing, even sexual abuse of underage pages, was more important than preventing the Democrats from reaping political gains.

5. This is an outrage
What is GW not telling the democratic party members in congress because he does not want things to be blown out of proportion. Since when did members of government decide what to discuss with which member of what committee they want to. :grr::grr::grr::grr::grr: Why is no one getting fired over this?

Thank you America for voting out these people. Not long for '08 to roll around.

9. Republicans Don't Care About Children
When it was announced that under the Democratic led Congress the Congressional workweek would be brought back up to five days, Republican Jack Kingston immediately attacked the Democrats. "Keeping us up here eats away at families. Marriages suffer. The Democrats could care less about families -- that's what this says."

If that's a valid criticism, doesn't this finding by the House Ethics Committee about the Mark Foley scandal mean that Republicans don't care about children?

14. Shimkus was also in high dudgeon
When he was accused of covering up what he knew about Foley, he raged and thundered, and demanded an apology from (if I recall correctly) Howard Dean and a House Democrat for saying or implying what he's now openly admitting.

So, Mr. Shimkus, will you be similarly "outraged" about your own admissions as you were about the perfectly truthful accusations of a couple months ago?

13. ....Cuz it ain't about the kid.
Just like it ain't about the nearly 3,000 dead American troops in Iraq, or the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis....

It's about their own asses and egos.
