Santa May Be Late This Year … By Nancy Greggs
In a true spirit of bipartisanship, I just wanted to wish all of the elected Republicans – those of you who will be back next year, and those of you who will be moving on – a very Merry Christmas.
As you go about your merry-making, please don’t let the problems you have caused for millions of Americans, as well as our global neighbors, interfere with having a good time.
Don’t allow your beautiful minds to be distracted by thoughts of Katrina victims who won’t be home for the holidays, because they no longer have a home. Thanks to your willful ignorance of their plight, many of them still don’t know where their family members are, or if they are even still alive. But ‘tis the season to be jolly, so please feel free to be so.
As you make the rounds of all of the right cocktail parties, dazzling your fellow guests with your designer clothes, don’t let thoughts of the millions of Americans who are jobless get you down. If they really wanted job security, they should have become politicians, a position that will never be outsourced, and will always come with raises and benefits, and even pensions that continue after you’ve broken the law and have to resign or are ousted in disgrace.
Raise a glass and toast yourselves for your failure to exercise oversight over a president and administration that are now drunk on the unfettered powers you handed them without consideration of the consequences, and forget the damage you have done to our democracy and our freedoms. As you deck the halls with boughs carefully crafted from the shredded Constitution you’ve allowed to be destroyed, be of good cheer.
Join your own family in the warmth of the fireplace, and try not to think about the millions you have plunged into poverty and despair through your support of heartless policies. I’m sure the families of Halliburton executives, along with those of the other war profiteers you have allowed to flourish, will share the warmth of the holiday season with you and yours.
Don’t allow the magic of St. Nick to be spoiled by thoughts of Americans curled up in front of their stoves, electric heaters, and other devices, because they can’t afford to turn on the furnace; remember that the oil companies hold the kindest of thoughts in their hearts for each and every one of you now, and always.
As you watch your own children enjoy the expensive goodies you've placed under the Christmas tree, do not waste a moment thinking about the millions of American children whose families are struggling to make ends meet -- children who will surely be content with an assurance from a tearful mom and dad that "maybe Santa will come NEXT year".
But most of all, Merry Christmas to George Bush and Dick Cheney and their wonderful families. What better way to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace than ensuring that the war you have started will continue unabated through the holidays and beyond. But it is the season to be jolly, and the thought that it is only someone else’s child who will be dying, and not one of your own, should make the Yuletide bright.
Yes, be merry and cheerful, my dear GOP. But be mindful that Santa, who brings each of us what we truly deserve, will be arriving late for many of you – delivering subpoenas, investigations, indictments and justice in what will be, for American citizens everywhere, a very Happy New Year.
