Edited on Thu Dec-28-06 01:23 AM by Gloria
Senator Edwards will be on TODAY, Good Morning America and CBS Early Show tomorrow morning. He will be on at the beginning of the 7am ET hour on each of the shows, according to his website.

2. this is poor media management

he is kicking off his campaign during a time when the news cycle
is being dominated by the death of a president.

his message, which appears to be quite appealing, isn't likely to
get out. it will be drowned out by the constant rehashing of
gerald ford's place in history that is going on right now.

3. Yeah, and it's unfortunate.
Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come for him.

10. I think It Was Already Planned.... Who Knew Gerry Was Going To Kick
the bucket??? I too feel it's too bad, I'm looking at threads here right now and it's STILL about a person I really had no interest in when he was President and one who didn't excite me in any way, shape or form.

I turned off all news coverage yesterday and will probably do EVERYTHING I can NOT TO WATCH the whole media coverage of his death! Sorry he passed, but hey it's forward for me.... Ford has been out of the limelight for so long and even if he did pardon Nixon I never took him very seriously!

I do realize he isn't the man many are saying he was, he has many skeletons too, but they ALL DO! I just won't be "doing" the Ford thing though!

I will try to keep the focus on Edwards myself. I've already made myself a HUGE bumper sticker out of older ones that I kept!

12. of course it was planned; but it should have been changed

the instant a former president passed away. a presidential
campaign kickoff it crucial; if it's done right, the candidate
owns the news cycle for days on end.

and it probably isn't worth discussing whether ford's place in
history justifies the coverage he is getting. the point is that
anyone who knows anything about MSM behavior should have known
this would be a week long media obsession, and compensated the
campaign plans accordingly.

13. I Can't Argue With You Here... Still The Hype Was Out There That
he was going to do this, so I think he just decided to go ahead. If this is going to be seen as a screw-up and we are going to pile on about it, I think it says a lot about US too!

I was just saying to my daughter yesterday that "my bones" feel some sort of change in the air. Can't put my finger on it, I'm no psychic but there's something.

EXAMPLE: Since my daughter and her family were coming for Christmas dinner she suggested that I decorate the house. I didn't do anything last year because I wasn't in the mood. So I went all out and decorated my house with hundreds and hundreds of BLUE BULBS, the old-fashioned screw in type that really show up. Living in Florida my shrubbery actually is still blooming, Ixoras and Hibiscus are still budding. Anyway, I took days & days to get each light on the shrubs just so by twisting each one on with wire to shine a certain way. Then I decided to make myself a big PEACE Sign to put on my front wall. After it was done, my husband said we needed to have the words "Peace" above it, but I said no.... the word would be IMAGINE, al la John Lennon!

I got a lot of compliments on my "blue" house, but I got so much more input form people talking about my PEACE Sign! This simple little sign just made the Holiday Season for me! What is even more important about the comments is that I happen to live in Sarasota County.... you know the District 13 that still doesn't have an answer about where 18,000 plus votes went??? So, I may be on a "short" high or something, but the neighborhood reaction really surprised me. This is Repuke country for the most part, we haven't had a Democrat elected since I don't know when. I can't remember one myself.

So, maybe his timing could have been better, but Ford hoopla will be gone soon and I intend to keep my PEACE Sign up all year round because some people have suggested it. From there, because I'm so political anyway... I can work on helping Edwards along with my PEACE Sign! Time will tell.

I'm completely fed up with all the "scrutiny" we do on issues that really shouldn't be blown out of context. But I do agree, the scrutiny will be there.... it's just not going to deter me, and I think I want to work toward "healing" rather than "splintering" all the time.

14. a half a dozen posts is hardly a pile on.

reasoned, valid criticism of candidates' campaign tactics
should be acceptable without it being labeled a "pile on".

I simply pointed out that he made an obvious media error.

I also said some very flattering things about him downstream
in this same thread.

16. No it isn't.
No matter when he announced, Americans weren't going to the TV to watch. By going on 3 networks that early in the morning, it ensured all those networks had their own coverage and would be likely to have the story on their news segments throughout the day. Then others will pick it up as well.

He had nothing to be gained by waiting. But he did catch millions who watch one of those 3 news programs each morning before work. Not only is that his target audience (workers) and caught all 3 networks at the same time, but the total that watched was in the millions. People watched him because they were already watching the show as part of their routine, thereby he reached millions who may otherwise not have watched his announcement - and important achievement.

18. Further...
Millions (I think tens of millions) of working class, middle class, and others watched those 3 news programs in the morning and those are pople who otherwise wouldn't have heard his message today. That's the way Edwards works - looking for opportunities that others are missing. Low key, but big opportunity areas in which to get your message out are key. If you're playing on the same field as the other candidates, you're battling them for the spotlight and for "market share." If you pick a high opportunity, low key place, you have the entire spotlight and entire "market share" in terms of media attention.

I've seen this used in many other campaigns and blends better with grassroots style campaigns. It tends to be very effective.

To some who didn't see it, it seems like a wasted opportunity and they'll go on seeing Edwards as ineffective and even less of a threat, perhaps. But the many millions who watched him this morning on three major networks are not so likely to view it so hastily.

6. May nor be so bad,
If it weren't for the distraction the Republican machine would be destroying him right now. That they are preoccupied may give him the opportunity to introduce his campaign without the usual flack from the BFEE artillery in the media. Edward's message is going to be challenging to the pseudo-Christians.

7. I saw his interview this morning

on faux news. I was flipping by and saw him being introduced,
and stopped to watch.

he was very, very good. he made an early reference to his two
america's theme, which caused me to worry that all he had for
2008 was warmed over 2004, but he built upon it very nicely.

he is the only one of the declared or probable candidates that
has anything that even resembles a full foundation of positions
on the issues. or, for that matter, has even articulated which
issues he considers important.

being faux news, they did have to throw at least one awkward
question at him; "what have you got that barack obama hasn't
got?" he deftly deflected it, and even managed to compliment
the other potential candidates in the process.

it's a very small sample size, but there may be more to this guy
than I previously thought. or maybe he has just grown significantly
since 2004 . . . .

9. Edwards is not the only one with a full range of positions
John Kerry has a full range of positions that he has articulated in his on-going series of Faneuil Hall speeches. They build on his 2004 positions and reflect the depth of his experience and vision.

Edwards 5 priorities will be issues EVERY Democrat will include - though they may be called something different. As they out together their platforms, every candidate will have ideas and rhetoric on each of these issues. As time goes on, all the platforms will be presented and the actual content of the plans should be looked at.

But rest assured, Obama, Clinton, Biden, Vilsak, etc will ALL have a full range of positions - just as all the 2004 candidates did.
