NYT/AP: Women's Milestones in U.S. Politics

....Sen. Hattie Wyatt Caraway, D-Ark., was appointed to the Senate to succeed her deceased husband in 1931. She later became the first woman elected to the Senate.

--Frances Perkins became the first woman to serve in the Cabinet, in 1933, when President Roosevelt appointed her secretary of labor.

--Sandra Day O'Connor became the first woman on the Supreme Court, in 1981.

--Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro, D-N.Y., became the first woman to run on a major party's national ticket, in 1984, when she was selected by Democrat Walter Mondale as his vice presidential running mate.

--Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is set to become first female speaker of the House this week. She became the first woman to head her party in Congress when she was elected House minority leader in 2002.

1. In 1916, Jeanette Rankin, R-Mont., became the first woman elected to the House
and the ONLY representative in both the House and the Senate to vote against the war resolution against Japan on December 8, 1941.

From wikipedia: "She became the first female Governor of Texas in 1924, and the second female state governor in the United States. Her husband, James Edward Ferguson, was governor from 1915 to 1917, but was impeached during his second term."

Don't forget Monica and that ghastly friend of hers who nearly brought down a sitting president. That has to appear somewhere in the milestones of women in politics. Though I dare say it is an infamous, rather than a famous, achievement.
