Paul Sheldon Sanford
July 29, 1956 - December 24, 2006

Attorney Paul Sheldon Sanford, 50, intrepid defender of the core principles of the U.S. Constitution, died unexpectedly on December 24, 2006. The Aptos resident was a dedicated and adoring husband to his beloved wife, Paula, and a devoted father to their children, Clayton and Barbara. He is also survived by the many other family members he held dear, including his mother, Barbara Hugus of Aptos, brother Brian of Felton, father George and brother Arthur of San Diego, and sister Jane Stabile of Wayland, Massachusetts.

Paul was raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and graduated from The Moses Brown School in Rhode Island. He attended Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut, where he excelled as a hockey and lacrosse player, and earned a degree in Political Science from Boston College. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Monterey College of Law, where he also taught Constitutional Law and the school's Small Claims Clinic. Paul always carried a copy of the Constitution in his back pocket.

For the past twenty years, Paul centered his activities in Santa Cruz County, where he was the long-time Programs Supervisor for the Volunteers Center and a tireless advocate for the rights of the homeless and the disenfranchised. His passion for the Constitution, however, took him far and wide, including a 2004 appearance before the United States Supreme Court in Washington DC in a matter involving the constitutional separation of church and state. As a journalist, Paul attended a White House press conference in 2005, during which he questioned then White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan about the potential violation of the statute protecting the identity of covert agents.

Paul's lifelong interest in politics stemmed from admiration for childhood idols, including grandfather Arthur Hendrick, and Robert Kennedy. As a teenager, Paul volunteered for the McGovern Presidential campaign. Later, he successfully managed the campaign of underdog David Magnani for the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where Paul served as a legislative aide. With his friend, Monterey attorney Shawn Mills, Paul hosted the "Paul and Shawn" show, which aired every Saturday on radio station KOMY.

Teammates from Connecticut College's first men's lacrosse team described Paul as "someone you could count on in the midst of battle on the field. Fearless, unselfish, dynamic and bold. A man with backbone." With his passing, one of Abraham Lincoln's "better angels," a well-loved and admired champion of individual rights, takes his rest.

In lieu of flowers, the family humbly requests that you stand up for what you believe.

There's a guest book to sign at the link provided. I wanted to post this so that DUers had an opportunity to pay thier respects. This was in the local paper today...

Let's honor Paul and support his family's heartfelt request by continuing the fight for truth and justice.
