Wow, Harriet Miers was an idiot
With the sad news that Harriet Miers has resigned as White House counsel, I felt it as good a time as any to remind everyone that this was the person President Bush felt most qualified for the U.S. Supreme Court:
"You are the best governor ever - deserving of great respect," Harriet E. Miers wrote to George W. Bush days after his 51st birthday in July 1997. She also found him "cool," said he and his wife, Laura, were "the greatest!" and told him: "Keep up the great work. Texas is blessed."

Ms. Miers, President Bush's personal lawyer and his selection for a Supreme Court seat, emerges as an unabashed fan in more than 2,000 pages of official correspondence and personal notes made public on Monday by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission in response to open-records requests.

(snip)

A few days later, Ms. Miers wrote to thank the Bushes, saying, "Texas has a very popular governor and first lady!" She recalled a little girl who collected Mr. Bush's autograph and said, "I was struck by the tremendous impact you have on the children whose lives you touch."

The notes to Mr. Bush date from at least March 1995, around the time he named her to the lottery commission, the files show. On March 25, on the letterhead of her Dallas law firm, Locke Purnell Rain Harrell, Ms. Miers wrote to thank him "for taking the time to visit in the office and on the plane back - cool!"

"Keep up all the great work," she wrote. "The state is in great hands. Thanks also for yours and your family's personal sacrifice."

In October 1997, Ms. Miers sent Mr. Bush a flowery greeting card in thanks for a letter that he had written on her behalf. In it, she said of his daughters: "Hopefully Jenna and Barbara recognize that their parents are 'cool' - as do the rest of us."

She added, "All I hear is how great you and Laura are doing," and ended, "Texas is blessed."
Wow. With an intellect like that, I know I was surprised when Miers didn't pan out with the court.

2. Those adoring looks she had for him were just plain creepy...
I betcha Laura wasn't too fond of her, in private. Dubya probably just regarded her as a useful idiot....pretty much how he regards all of us.

6. She has a problem with writing skills, too.
She doesn't seem to know the difference between your and you're, nor what words should be capitalized. I didn't read down too far, as it was nauseating. She sounds like an Elvis groupie.

14. This reminds me of a very funny Mo Dowd column!
I found a link here
snip...

April 2002 "I was worried that it could go unstated in the rush of
business
around here, but I just wanted to pause and say how amazing it is that,
after doing so much for the American people already, you keep showing
up for
work most days. We have to come, but you choose to. You're the
hardest-working president ever!!"

October 2002 "I'm not sure Condi has made the time to thank you
herself, so
I just wanted to say how much we appreciated the tickets to 'Madame
Butterfly' on Saturday night. I wore my long black robe - I mean, opera
cape. I just wish it had had that song from 'The Sound of Music' - I
know
you love it, too - 'Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels. ...'
You're one of my favorite things, sir!"

16. I can't remember who it was but
I saw this interview on C-Span, around the time she was nominated for the SCOTUS. It was a man who had been to meet with Bush at the WH, can't remember which famous powerful person it was...anyway, he explains about how you are ushered into the oval office for your meeting and kind of prepped, like how much time you have, etc. He said it was Harriet Miers who ushered him in. He said soon after that he heard she had been nominated and was shocked that she had gone from WH usher to SCOTUS candidate.

I found that amazing. Even more amazing is that it wasn't even mentioned in the media. That is a little story I should think worthy of reporting and further investigation.
