Key Democrat might consider troop boost in Iraq

By Susan Cornwell

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush is likely to link any short-term increase in U.S. troop levels in Iraq to political milestones or other conditions, a key Senate Democrat said on Thursday, saying he might consider backing such a "surge" if those conditions are right.

Michigan Democrat Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record) also predicted the Republican president would soon find a way to end the "open-ended commitment" of U.S. troops to Iraq, even if Bush does propose a short-term boost in forces.

"I can't believe the president is simply going to say, 'We're going to increase troops in Iraq,"' Levin told reporters outside the Senate. "It's likely the president would add something of a conditionality to it."

"The (recent congressional) election is far too clear, that the public wants to change course and find a way out of Iraq and not get in deeper in Iraq," said Levin, who is the incoming chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

1. Levin actually thinks there is more to the troop surge then the surge itself ?

I am at a loss to figure out why Levin would believe Bush actually had a plan beyond the surge itself. Bush's track record is pretty clear.

It starts- the stall and excuses.

2. He's not the only one:
Webb too.

I hope after they consider it, they discover it's a bad idea.

3. I still believe it won't work and is a foolish undertaking.
This seems to be an attempt to give Bush one more try and see what happens. I don't care if Webb is a moderate, I wonder why he would think this would work, when it has already been tired before. Is he speaking more for the people in his state than out of a personal feelings?

Too bad it's the wealth elites who ALWAYS end up rewarded while the Middle and Lower Classes get the shaft. I wonder if they rehearse at their inside the beltway circle jerk parties?

I'm disgusted. No! We need to clean the DINOs out of the DemocratIC Party. :grr:

7. Puhlease...
Levin and Webb are giving Bush just enough rope to hang themselves. Like it or not, our democratic government has processes...I think Levin is trying to keep him in check which is the smart thing to do. Bless these Patriots.
