bear in mind that forces of change come from outside the halls of power.
The having of power, by its nature, tends to generate a liking for the status quo, at least within a range of acceptability. A successful election can be both the best and the worst thing to happen to a bunch of people who want to actually achieve something.

We like to think of ourselves as the party of the New Deal, but it was the labor and other activists who forced the Dems to become that. So it goes with our greatest issues today.
