As Pelosi entered the chamber before her formal, party-line election, the House erupted in bipartisan applause. Only Rep. Joe Barton, R-Arlington, the outgoing chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, remained seated in stony silence.

1. Did you see the reluctant limp-wristed applause that Hastert finally

gave when he realized the cameras might be on him?

15. Something like that did happen ...
I remember a story about a Repuke getting his/her panties in a bunch because a Dem "dissed" the Repuke by not standing ... when the Dem was a parapalegic confined to a wheelchair and unable to stand ... even with the Dem in plain sight ...

5. What a dick
I like this entry in Wikipedia:

"A member of the Republican Study Committee, which promotes "the preservation of traditional family values", Barton divorced his first wife, the former Janet Sue Winslow, with whom he has three children, in 2003."

7. Oops. They got hit where it hurts: in their pockets.
No more lavish freebies from lobbyists under Pelosi rule. And they're going to have to work 5 days a week, dammit!

Maybe Hastert will lose some weight. He always looks like he's about to have a stroke or a heart attack.

8. "House Energy and Commerce Committee," haha, that says it all.
What secrets must he be keeping? The man probably sharded when he saw the Democrats come into office and was afraid to stand up.

9. Get this guy a waaaaahmbulance...

More on this loser from Wikipedia:

In 1993, Barton ran in the special election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the resignation of Lloyd Bentsen, who became secretary of the treasury in the Clinton administration. Barton finished third in the contest and missed a runoff slot.

Rep. Barton has been regarded as a "skeptic" on global warming and his opposition to addressing global warming has been consistent and long-term. As a powerful chairman with primary responsibility over the energy sector, Barton has consistently acted over the years to prevent congressional action on global warming. In 2001, Barton declared, "as long as I am chairman, (regulating global warming pollution) is off the table indefinitely. I don't want there to be any uncertainty about that."

In addition, Barton has consistently opposed proposals to reduce the nation's dependence on oil.

A member of the Republican Study Committee, which promotes "the preservation of traditional family values", Barton divorced his first wife, the former Janet Sue Winslow, with whom he has three children, in 2003.

In Fall 2006, Barton refused to release the Combating Autism Act from House subcommittee despite the unanimous passage by Senate.

He does, however, have one redeeming quality:

Barton revealed during a congressional hearing on video games that he was a video game player. He announced that he had "worked way up to Civilization IV".

10. He still in shock and reeling
He just needs to get over it.

I have to admit, I'm thoroughly enjoying seeing them all squirm and cry. But, I think its crucial to administer this treatment on a short-term basis. The Cons that moan "I wasn't here. It wasn't me! It's not fair!" need to go through the experience. And the new Dems need to have feel empowered and unafraid.

Cons will get their turn, unlike they gave Dems. I do believe that the Dem leadership is being very shrewd about it and won't overplay it. But doing it like this in the beginning can keep a level of threat that they can do it again.

Put the Cons in the Naughty Chair for a couple of months to teach them good behavior.

12. At one point during Nancy's speech, the camera panned the audience at an applause point....
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 12:54 PM by Minnesota_Lib
...and I saw this one guy just sitting there in stone cold silence glaring toward the dais while all those around him stood and applauded (well, polite applause anyway--they were, after all, Repugs). He creeped me out. I didn't know who he was at the time but it stuck me that this is one angry and vindictive man.

Your post perked my curiosity so I just googled an image of Barton and sure enough it was the same guy. What a dickweed.

14. More about this corrupt swine, who voted against post- Katrina aid,
here, and his campaign to intimidate climate scientists, below. Nancy Pelosi should be honored that someone so contemptible is not a fan of hers.

http://www.prospect.org/web/page.ww?section=root&name=ViewWeb&articleId=9932

"Indeed, Barton's letters betray a deeply naïve notion of how scientific debates can be resolved--the idea that as one can simply "get the data" and thereby discover an objective answer. In fact, it can be difficult to divorce data themselves from the methodological framework in which they are embedded, and controversies over methodology cannot simply be resolved by an "audit" process.

And on top of everything else, the so-called debate over the "hockey stick" is a pseudo-spectacle that has been largely generated by global-warming doubters, who have singled out a study to nitpick and attack even though the scientific case for human-caused global warming is built upon multiple strands of evidence and would not be significantly compromised even if the "hockey stick" were to be invalidated. That the Republican Congress has now announced its intent to investigate this matter -- and done so in the context of intimidating and burdensome requests for information from scientists -- is stunning. If such requests are allowed to stand, the precedent set could have a chilling effect on research in controversial areas such as climate change, and could also make the NSF more hesitant about funding such work. "

19. ole westar burton ... knows he will be spanked by ethics problems
even if the ethics rules were not changed - all that had to happen for him to start getting caught and spanked again, was for the committee to start meeting again. Joe probably knows his political career has a limited future as a congressman but is also probably self-righteously already pinning the blame on Pelosi and the dems for that inevitable outcome, rather than taking any responsibility for his bad actions in congress.
