STUPAK STATEMENT ON SWEARING-IN OF 110TH CONGRESS WASHINGTON

- As the 110th Congress convened today, Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) issued the following statement:

"I was honored today to be sworn into an eighth term of Congress, representing Michigan's 1st Congressional district. The people of northern Michigan have elected me for another two years of service and I am honored by their trust and support. My staff and I will continue to provide my constituents with the best service possible and I will continue to have seven district offices spread throughout my district to serve constituents' needs.

"With Democrats in the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in 12 years, I look forward to working with my colleagues on issues that matter to the people of northern Michigan, such as raising the minimum wage, requiring Medicare to negotiate with drug companies for cheaper prescription drugs, implementing the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission and finding a plan for Iraq that can bring our troops home swiftly and safely.

"I also believe this new Congress will return transparency and honesty to the U.S. House of Representatives. The public has placed in us a sacred trust and I will work with my colleagues to ensure that Congress lives up to that trust.

"Finally, this day is particularly historic as the U.S. House of Representatives has elected its first female Speaker, Nancy Pelosi. This sends a powerful message to Americans everywhere that America is the land of opportunity where any citizen with the dedicated effort can achieve their dreams and will not be held back by artificial barriers of gender or race."

During her opening remarks, Speaker Pelosi stated, "This is an historic moment - for the Congress, and for the women of this country. It is a moment for which we have waited more than 200 years."

Pelosi continued, "I accept this gavel in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship, and look forward to working with you on behalf of the American people. In this House, we may belong to different parties, but we serve one country."

Stupak also noted that he was selected to serve as Speaker pro tempore of House, on Friday, the second day of the 110th Congress. In this honorary position, Stupak presided over the House Friday morning.
