Does Anyone Else Find The Term "Surge" Weirdly Sexual?
Now we all know that those in the Bush camp love to compare their man to a turgid penis.

The media are all but falling over themselves to be the first to spew this message into the national discourse. How many times have we hear Bush is "firm" or he's taking a "hard" stance compared to Democrats that are "soft" on terror.

Also, he's a dick.

In any case:

Surge

1. To rise and move in a swelling manner.
2. To increase suddenly
3. To improve one's performance suddenly
4. (Nautical) To loosen or slacken gradually.

Note: I'm guessing they're not shooting for #4.

Synonyms:

rush forward
pour
gush
flow
course
stream
swell
rise
spill out
outpouring

Pundits suggest that this is about Bush losing face, but since the media understands foreign policy only as a "dick thing" - and therefore politicians have no choice but to follow suit - my uneducated guess is that Bush is afraid of losing something else in his old age.

Good thing no one gets hurt by these sexual-linguistic games.

Maybe that's why it's no longer a 'quick shot'
That wouldn't speak well of his 'manhood'.

6. Neo-con newspeak.
I think it's just an attempt at a euphemism. And since when is "surge" a transitive verb? Apparently they needed a new way to distract the populace with silly sounding words and phrases.

7. Good thing they replaced "surge" with the totally non-sexual "plus up."

13. Have You Watched Chris Matthews in the Last Forever or So?
Or Tim Russert or Wolf Blitzer or the Washington Post or just about any example of contemporary news media in action?

Now that's an elementary school recess.

My point (however juvenile in method) is that this is PRECISELY how the media functions, like a bunch of infantile knuckleheads, and the White House knows this.

Democrats have far too much respect for the "liberal" media, when the real bias of the media is juvenile theatrics (and egocentricity, natch).

16. Please don't take that personally
I was referring to the word "surge" and students running out the door at recess. I rarely watch those programs and do miss out on most of the word games they play. The idea that "surge" is being used by the Administration/media for it's sexual undertones had never entered my mind until reading your post. Sorry if I offended you.

I'm sure....

War always uses sexual terms.

14. "Surge" was bugging me because it's an old (pre-16th century) term for
for a uterine contraction during childbirth. Some midwives I know who are into linguistics sometimes still use it. That was the first association I got out from this ridiculous marketing ploy. It is irritating to me, because, well, childbirth eventually ends. This "surge" isn't intended to do anything but prolong. Bad vocab call, Pentagon.
