We're buying "An Inconvenient Truth" to make a clear statement.

ChicaAzul and I just rented "An Inconvenient Truth" this past weekend. It is the first time we've seen it and yes, we're a bit late to the party, primarily due to sitter availability and out doubt that a first grader could sit through the movie.

I'm not going comment on the brilliance of the movie and the enduring sense of loss over the absence of a thoughtful, sensitive and DULY ELECTED President. It would be rehashing the comments that have been made often & earlier in these same forums. If this were any other movie, ChicaAzul and I would add it to our list of movies we will get when we see them on the used shelf of the video store.

This one, we are going to buy new. A minor reason is that new, it has an environmentally responsible cover. We are going to follow the guidelines in the movie and on the website as religiously as we can, even if it means spending a few more dollars.

The main reason is much more significant.

After having the message that we have to follow our "president" blindly shoved down our throats for the last 6 years, We want to make a statement that from January 20, 2001 until January 20, 2005, Al Gore WAS OUR PRESIDENT. Since January 20, 2005, OUR president has been John Forbes Kerry.

We're patriotic Americans. We recognize that the destruction of our planet is a MORAL issue. We follow what our president tells us to do.

For you lurking freepers out there who are clamoring to remind me that this mindless ninny in the white house is my president, I'll ask one question. Was Bill Clinton YOUR president? BTW, HE actually won BOTH of HIS elections.

Peel off your "Charlton Heston is MY president" stickers before you answer.

A co-worker told my husband today that global warming is a lie and scientists said so. After pointing out that the only scientists denying global warming are hired by oil companies, he told her she should watch An Inconvenient Truth. "Oh no," she says, "I couldn't stand to watch that. Gore's a liar."

We are in Michigan and we've had snowfall next to nil this year. We finally got a dusting today and this same woman started lamenting about how the company never gives them snow days. My husband replied, "Yes they do. We got plenty of them back in the 70's - before global warming."

Your respect for Gore as our President reminds me of our daughter when she was still in high school. Her Government class was watching a post s-election 2000 video. Her ignorant classmates were mocking Gore and calling him Sore Loserman. She spoke up and told them to show some respect, they were talking about our President. I told my husband he should have used that line on his co-worker too.

I love my family :)

since June, 2006 but the first one I saw after a 6 month hiatus was "An Inconvenient Truth", yesterday!

I got it from netflix and immediately passed it on today to one of my friends at the co-op who hasn't seen yet.

I'm thinking we should sell it at the co-op and ask our local library to get it or maybe I'll make a donation.

It's so well presented and Gore was born to do this!

Our local library was thrilled when I gave them a copy ... along with the "Electric Car" one mentioned on this thread, and "End of Suburbia". They normally don't carry much in the way of activist documentaries (like "Suburbia"), but apparently so many people were asking for Gore's film that they caved in on related topics too.

Just under half of the students had seen the movie before, but I'd broken down the DVD chapters, highlighting which parts would be most appropriate, and included comprehension questions to keep them paying attention. I went to this extra effort because I felt that the film does give a good background for the issues -- and the prof I work for supported it fully.

I estimate that I've bought a half-dozen copies so far ... one for me, one for school use, one for my folks, two as gifts to friends ... and another which I gave to the local library branch, since their waiting list for the movie is now >200 people long.

I suspect that other people have been scouring the stores too, since several places were sold out -- they didn't anticipate how popular the DVD would be, so now they are really scrambling! That should really help send a message.

I gave them to friends, family and staff. Did you know that a portion of the proceeds are going towards funding more global warming research/awareness?

I am so glad you bought it - this is one of the most important things you can do to get the message out here in the US.

I just popped over there to see what they were and there are so many that would require my spending well more than I can afford to do.

Sure, I can get the lightbulbs, limit our driving to one car on the weekends (which we already do) and live in an area abundant with trees (I won't buy a home without tons of trees in the yard), but even if I liked the looks of hybrid cars (which I don't), they cost about $12,000 more than the car I just bought and, with a baby on the way, it's downright difficult to afford extras like home audits and more expensive wood.

And I'm sure I'm not the only middle class American to feel the pinch when TRYING to do the right thing, environmentally.

What can help solve this dilemma?

I'm on a rather limited income -- and actually that in itself is helping keep my carbon emissions below average (don't own a car and very rarely fly anywhere). Ride-sharing, taking public transit, and combining trips can all help reduce driving. (In my neighborhood some parents started a "walking schoolbus" where they take turns escorting the local kids to school.)

At home, turning down the temp on the hot water heater, using cold water in the washing machine where possible, and using a clothesline when the weather permits can make a significant difference. Also, one of those programmable themostats (set lower in the winter and higher in the summer) can reduce energy use year-round. They don't cost that much and they pay for themselves very quickly. My parents installed one about 20 years ago, and having survived the Depression they are notoriously reluctant to spend money on ANY newfangled gadgets (they didn't get a microwave until 1990 and a home computer until 2004). Many of the traditional money-saving measures (not buying unnecessary stuff with lots of packaging, getting in-season food at local markets, etc.) are right in line with a more sustainable lifestyle anyway -- so I suspect that you are already doing quite a bit on your own.

This can help save not just emissions, but money which will be handy for the new baby's educational fund.

Spending $50 less a month on gas (proving you understood the point of the film) is going to send a clearer message than buying a DVD (which used up energy to create).

The National Science Teachers Association wouldn't accept 50,000 free DVDs because the American Petroleum Institute bought them off.

My perspective is along the same lines, but slightly different. Gore was the rightful winner of the 2000 election (if the intent of voters in Florida had been respected). He should have been re-elected in 2004, and would now be starting the 7th year of his Presidency (if only!).

I also agree that the 2004 election was not a clean election in certain key states. There is really no way of knowing if Kerry would have won if the election had been clean. According to the official results - most people got the impression that Bush was well ahead on the popular vote. Not that I believe the official results. But I think it's much easier to make the case that the 2000 election was stolen.

I still say that Gore is a visionary and he has been proved right on so many issues. Not just the climate crisis but also the invasion of Iraq and the PATRIOT Act, and the abuses of power by the current (P)Resident of the Whitehouse.

Gore will be 60 years old in 2008. So he is not too old to run again, if he thinks that the American people want him to run again. Certainly he is quite a few years younger than John Kerry, Wesley Clark, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani. He is also a full 5 months younger than Hillary Rodham Clinton!
