Larry the Cable Guy's huge coverage on our front page...shoved our Iraq protest
down into the tiny right bottom quadrant of the print version. Teeny tiny picture of our rally of over 60 last night....big ugly picture of the Cable Guy with a big write-up.

They did not even have an article about the protestors. Nothing. They did not even put the picture online. Why is Larry the Cable Guy considered local front page news anyway? Pathetic.

But Larry the Cable guy got in the online version...plus his big write-up. I would say this goes to priorities. I can just see the over 2000 folks at the Youkey center waving their beer cans and making fun of gays and muslims.

I apologize for the small nature of Larry the Cable Guy's picture. It was really much larger in the print edition..

An Equal Opportunity Offender

LAKELAND - Gays, gangs and his own grandmother were fodder.

Larry the Cable Guy, the equal opportunity offender, kicked off his six-show run at The Lakeland Center on Thursday night by filling the 2,300-seat Youkey Theatre with beer-waving, camouflage-wearing fans.

In his trademark sleeveless shirt and baseball cap, performer Dan Whitney pulled few punches. Peppering the night with profanity and sexual overtones, he mocked Hispanics, the physically handicapped and the mentally disabled. And he had plenty of fun with the weight-challenged, including himself.

"I don't look good in a thong," Whitney said. "If you don't believe me, ask the police."

What can I say? Priorities, priorities. An editor of the paper said was too concerned over the Iraq War. He was right. I won't have any letters printed for a while, I guess.

I would like to show you the teeny tiny picture of our rally here, but I would have to scan it.

Larry the Cable Guy sucked up all the damn air online.

1. Just all part of the dumbing down of America
News has become Entertainment News. I can't tell you how much it pisses me off to hear "The latest exploits on last night's Survivor" as being one of the top "news" items of the night. The news media has failed miserably at keeping the citizens informed.

if our party leaders use their power. If not, well then we're screwed.

4. The funniest thing about Larry is how his face resembles
the ass-crack top oozing from the back of his jeans.

How does he do it? How does he get that done?

5. Whoa, cutting edge
A comedian who makes fun of minorities and the disabled? Hoo boy, talk about someone not afraid to attack the power centers of society! And his audience was filled with folks wearing camouflage? Golly, I'll be they're all real supportive of the military. Right up to the very second it might come calling for them.

Easy to see why that's far more important and newsworthy than any boring war or protest coverage.

Doubt it matters. I tried, but they think we are all too obsessed with the war.

They are getting worse about it now.

The stupid people.

Stupid people think Bush speaks for them and not just for the rich.

You can call me an elitist, but at least I'm not stupid.

25. suprised that the "stupid"
people can afford the ticket price. My boss who is a multi-millionair, is a huge larry fan. Do tell me how stupid people are able to find a job that pays them enough to pay for a sitter, afford the ticket price, maybe drive an hour or 2 to see it.

Class warfare does not translate well into comedy.

Ron White, Bill Engvall, and Jeff Foxworthy are all genuinely funny people--in their own way. Larry is just a disgusting pile of horse shit who doesn't deserve to shine their shoes.

12. Other jokes.... tasteless
""(We) know who's blowing airplanes up, and they don't look like they just came out of the First Baptist Church."

"My buddy caught a rainbow trout," Whitney said. "And threw it back because he didn't want a gay fish."

"Whitney said he's had his fill of seemingly senseless airport security checks that single out a typical country boy like him."

Uh, Mr. Cable Guy, I hope to goodness you are not typical of country people. I don't think you are.

I bet they hope so, too.

He is this way on Comedy Central? I have never watched him on there.

15. Into the woodchipper, Larry
First: he's as southern as I am (I'm from Seattle, he's from Nebraska).
Second: he purposely misspells words in his fan communications to not make them feel dumb.
Third: he's such a fucking vacuum of not funny that he makes a drooling retard like Jeff Foxworthy seem like Bill Hicks.

Into the woodchipper, Larry.

I can't believe people would go by the thousands to hear him. I just remembered, does he wear his trousers so his crack shows? I think I saw him on a show once.

18. Well, it apparently played well here.
The article about him and the huge picture, bigger in print than online...covered almost half the front page of the lcoal section.

I will have to watch him sometime. Is his act a parody? Or is he really insulting all those people?

23. I think you answered your own question. You had 60 people, he had 2000.
Lakeland Florida has a population of about 78-80K. You managed to assemble 60. Why should an assembly of less than .1% of the population make news? I am sure people are having cookouts this weekend with more people attending.

24. Doesn't answer the question of why he is well-liked.
I know why we were very happy to have 60 plus. We live in an area that loves their George Bush.

But I can not see why he would get front-page coverage in any paper. He is tasteless.

26. Letter to the editor today about their huge write-up
http://theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070122/NEWS/701220431/1037/EDIT

"Larry the Cable Guy

I think it's interesting that one of The Ledger's journalists placed Larry the Cable Guy's picture in the paper and emphasized that he ridiculed Mexicans, the mentally disabled, etc. <"An Equal Opportunity Offender, Jan. 12, page B1>.

People who happen by no fault of their own to be of Hispanic descent or mentally challenged are human beings with needs and aspirations. Wouldn't it be absurd to make fun of someone experiencing convulsions because of epilepsy or a diabetic coma?

It is my hope that the next time you promote a celebrity, it is for doing something special for the community.

SCOTT GIBSON
Winter Haven"

28. I have seen other posters from around the country posting the same
complaint.

This is why the mainstream media is becoming more irrelevant. Proof of their irrelevance was the last election cycle, where we took control of the house and senate. People just are not buying it anymore.

 :hi:
