U.S. policies have made Israel less safe, experts say

By DION NISSENBAUM
McClatchy Newspapers

JERUSALEM - After years of supporting the Bush administration's policy in the Middle East, a growing number of Israelis are openly criticizing the United States for creating more, not less, danger for Israel.

Israeli experts contend that American policies have destabilized Iraq, emboldened anti-Western forces from Iran to Lebanon and paved the way for militant Islamists to gain control of the Palestinian Authority.

"The threats to Middle East security and stability worsened in 2006," experts at Tel Aviv University's Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies recently warned. "The American failure in Iraq has hurt the standing of the U.S. in the Middle East."

3. Well Ain"t That Rich
Ironies abound. The neos lie us into war as a first step in conquering the world and, helping to make Israel safer and now we find that even they think the whole mess is a stinking failure. Does this mean Israel will stop pumping for war with Iran?

4. The situation of Isreal right now..
... can best be described by the old saying "watch out what you ask for, you just might get it".

They sure weren't against this "war" 3 years ago.

6. "They"? Netanyahu does not = Israel
There were plenty of Israelis who were only to happy to see us charge into Iraq. But there were also plenty of Israelis who saw this comiing and were scared to death. There was a much more vigorous public debate there (about the wisdom of toppling Hussein) than we had here.

My point is that we should be carefull how broad a brush we use to paint the Israeli political spectrum. Just like here- Bush and neo-con does not = American public.

9. You're Right Of Course
And it's something that should be remembered. How has it happened that a small group, here and there, have been allowed to so endanger the world?

10. Exactly!
The Israelis have been VERY divided for a long time. Elections tend to be very close. All the Israelis whom I know (with one nutty exception), hate the Likud and especially hate Netanyahu. Of course, the people I know aren't a representative sample, just as I know lots of Americans and I don't think a single one voted for Bush in 2004. But Israel does not = Netanyahu/ Likud/ Bush-lovers.

IMO, the destabilization of the Middle East due to the war poses a serious danger to Israel as well as other countries.

13. I was talking about..
... the Isrealis who WERE for the war, and I believe there were plenty of them. I also believe AIPAC was strongly in support of the war and those who were promoting it.

Prove me wrong.

As for the Isreali people, I'm well aware that not all of them are even remotely in agreement. Just as in our own country. But the bottom line is that all Israelis, and ALL Americans are ultimately responsible for what is done in their names.

14. Welcome to DU! Well-put. But then again, I can remember WAY back
when I was a teenager and the Vietnam War was raging, I knew students from overseas who opposed the war, but thankfully knew the difference between the American people and the government. One of them (funny enough, of Arab extraction) used to say, all the time, "it's not YOU. It's your GOVERNMENT."

Remember that the insane Christians (Robertson, Hagee, Falwell, Crouch) are pulling Olmert's puppet strings just like they pull Bush's
