Va. senator to give Democrats' rebuttal to State of the Union
By BOB LEWIS
AP Political Writer
January 16, 2007
RICHMOND, Va. -- Freshman Sen. Jim Webb will deliver the Democrats' response next Tuesday to President Bush's State of the Union address.

The selection was made Tuesday by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, said Webb spokeswoman Jessica Smith.

Webb's upset victory over Republican Sen. George Allen was the decisive race in giving the Democrats control of Congress in last year's midterm elections.

Webb will speak for about five minutes shortly after Bush's address to a joint session of Congress on Jan. 23.

41. Webb is not a politician.
His public speaking is not really stronger than Tim Kaine's. Tim was really off his normal cadence last year.

Based on the few times I saw Jim Webb during the campaign, my expectations are:
Webb will not wow you with his elocution, but he will tell it like it is in a boy-next-door style. Don't expect a glib snake oil salesman, expect intelligence, honesty and sincerity in a simple forth right manner. Rather than Speaking at you, he will talk to you.

Go Webb!

I'm sure there are others here at DU who know him personally and can tell you more than I can.

71. I agree with your critique of his speaking style...
And I think it will be the perfect type of response to the male bovine waste product it has to follow. When you add in all the other circumstances of his life and his election to the Senate, he's got the backstory needed to give it an extra punch.

I'll look forward to that portion of the evening's broadcast!

I mean... de- finitely? Isn't something finite something that has definable characteristics/borders/edges? Doesn't the de at the beginning of the word make the meaning the opposite? Anyway, it sounds like it should be spelled definately...

14. That's a good question!
After shrub's speech last week - I think only CNN and MSNBC showed Dick Durbin's response.

This might be a good action item: to contact the major networks and ask if they will be showing the DEM response by Webb.

I think that he's a tough guy, but we'll know for sure after the speech.
I wish that he could run in during shrub's speech, tackle him to the ground and then give his reply while he keeps a foot on the chimp's back. He could pause every minute or so to kick him square in the ass.

Jim Webb was very clear in his commitment to a six year term as the Senator "D" from Virgina. The first time I saw him speak was at a primary speech he made to some twenty people in a Richmond suburban community college classroom.
When I got home that night I sent the first of several investments through the primary into the election. Best investments I ever made!

34. Correction: the Tester win was the decisive race in giving D's control of Congress
Allen was in reality defeated well before he conceded. It took the Tester victory later that night to give the 51st seat to those caucasing with the Dems. And Tester's win relied on counties in MT that encompassed or adjoined Indian reservations. (Natives are about 8% of MT's population)

I remember it was some anonymous congresscreature reciting what Bush had said, and simply said "We can do better. We can do better."

If this speech turns out just as wimpy, look for several more years of war.

I don't know why he didn't come across better. He was much better in his campaign; he was great in his debates. In fact, he is usually more natural at public speaking than Webb. Maybe Kaine needs a live audience to do well.
