Gore Has NOT Definitively Ruled Out Another Presidential Run...
From Melinda Henneberger for the Huffington Post
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/01/16/huffpos-melinda-henneber_n_38770.html

When I read that Al Gore had revealed his decision not to run for president in '08 to his friends in the Japanese press, I knew for sure there was no message in there for us in the American media -- no way, right? And if the man television never loved was rather enjoying his success in mobilizing public opinion on global climate change with a movie, well, who could blame him?

As it turns out, though, Gore did no such thing, and contrary to the Reuters report out of Tokyo, has not definitively ruled out another presidential run. (Neither has he given those close to him any indication he's seriously considering it, though many in his party continue to hope he'll reconsider.)

"Absolutely nothing new,'' Gore spokesman Michael Feldman said of the report. "He's been saying the same thing for six years - that he's not running but has not completely ruled it out - and depending on where he is, it's reported differently.''

The Japanese might not have 50 different ways to say, "I'm not running 'til I am,'' but we do, which at the moment strikes me as a measure of deep linguistic abundance; we'll take it.

3. Gore is keeping his options open
Several times Al Gore has been asked to rule out running in 2008, and each time he has refused to do so. My feeling is that he is keeping his options open, at least for the time being.

He is already preparing to start a national debate about how America is governed, with his next book - "The Assault on Reason" - to go on sale May 22.

So in late May and early June we can expect to see a lot more of Al Gore. By coincidence - right around the time that speculation around the 2008 election will be warming up!

Nobody is better qualified to be President of the United States than Al Gore.

Gore has been proven right on so many issues, from climate change to the invasion of Iraq.

Next Monday he will draw a crowd of more than 12000 people for a speech in Boise, Idaho !! :-)

If he is ready and willing to seek the Dem nomination, I predict that Gore will lead the field.

Unless and until he endorses another candidate, we should assume he is keeping his options open.

In the meantime - we can all find ways of helping to create the right conditions!

In Gore We Trust :-)

7. He's waited too long if he wants to run
yes, Edwards, Obama and (soon to be) Hillary have only recently made their intentions publically known (it's a foregone conclusion with Hillary), but they've all been getting commitments from the top Democratic fundraisers for months and years in the case of Hillary. They've all been getting commitments from the top politcal advisers as well.

If Gore were to announce now, he'd be way behind and he's too smart a politician to have made a mistake like that. So I would be shocked to see him run- playing coy was fine last summer, but it would be too late now.

9. Don't think so
First of all, he could self-finance. He's made a boatload of money on his investments since he's been out of politics. He made 50 million on Google alone.

Secondly, a couple of months ago some of the big money men in the Democratic party openly said they might sponsor a fund-raiser for Warner, for instance, (he was running then) but it was well understood that if Al Gore got in, all bets were off. Many of the big financiers openly appeal to Gore to run, just as Carter recently did.

He can wait a year from the election before throwing in his hat, as well he should. Between now and then, Obama and Hillary will be beating up on each other and perhaps vulnerable to a late entrant. By lying low, Gore can let the blows begin without taking any punches and be a target in this campaign for the shorter distance. That way, he saves himself for the real mudslinging begins in earnest with the Pubs.

That's my take on it.
