Why should us teens have to pay?
Edited on Wed Jan-17-07 10:25 PM by GeneCosta
Considering the addiction America has with war, it's a blessing that American Presidents have at least tried to live by the policy of not handing off their war debts to their children -- until now.

So why should my generation pay for a war we can't even vote on? Nobody enjoys higher taxes, but I think people should put us, their kids, before their purse. Especially considering it's not the debt that will trouble us the most, but the rising tension between the West and the Middle-East.

1. Excellent point.
BushCo don't give a damn about the future, their whole agenda is the exercise of power, here and now. The fact that they're saddling the adults of tomorrow with a ruined environment, broken international relations, a shell-game economy and a filleted Constitution is of no concern to them whatsoever. That'll be someone else's problem, not theirs. Meanwhile, they can play their enormous game of Risk and feel like Big Boys until someone takes their toys away.

Young people are right to be totally pissed of about everything that's been done to their country. I hope when you guys get into power, you make a better job of it than my generation is doing.

2. You raise a good question. I will answer part of it.
Personally, I have never had a problem with paying taxes for the good of our society, which I would hope also benefits other countries through programs we support (at least that's the way it used to be).

I have a big, big, big problem with the misuse, abuse, and outright piracy of our tax dollars to line the pockets of people who don't care about you, don't care about me, don't care about anyone but themselves.

On the other end of the spectrum, you can bet that we baby boomers will find ourselves also being stuck with the high cost of this war, in the form of staggering taxes (which the highest percentile will not feel the effects), and probably they will raise the age of retirement so we can just work until we drop dead on the job.

I don't know if the Democrats can fix this mess or not. Look how quickly bush destroyed everything that Clinton and Gore did to restore this country to a balanced budget and a surplus in Social Security.

I'm sorry, GeneCosta. There are no easy answers, there is no fair solution yet discovered. But remember that boomers are in many ways still paying for the Vietnam War. Someone well-versed in socioeconomics can no doubt explain that better than I.

3. you're right....
....when your generation grabs the levers of power may I suggest that you just stop paying interest on the national debt and realocate national priorities....make up some lame excuse for a moratorium on payment....

....wait a couple years and start paying the interest again with proceeds from a tax placed on private wealth and/or it's access....it should hurt capital to squander the wealth of our country....

6. In the twisted minds of the curs that are running our country, it is precisely
because you cannot vote and have no voice, that you have to pay, they are buying "our" votes with your credit card.
