Wow, John Edwards is livin' large!!!!
Check out this spread he just bought in N.C.! It's the most expensive home in the entire county. I actually didn't think Edwards was that rich. I knew he was a millionaire, but damn!

2. I will say this much: Edwards does not deny he is rich.
He freely admits it, and there is nothing wrong with that.

There is something about the self-proclaimed anti-poverty candidate living in such excess and luxury compared to the average American that strikes an uncomfortable chord with me, however.

4. This is a dupe. Besides, so? nt
Living in a smaller home just to somehow prove he is "one of us" would be awfully phony, don't you think?

6. It's also about the environmental hypocrisy.
I'd be curious as to how large a house Gore owns.

14. Well I think the have-nots in America could all move to his house
It's so damn big!

I like that Edwards is talking about poverty, but this mansion of his is a problem. It's gonna be hard to talk about his 2 Americas deal with such a MASSIVE spread. It makes him more unbelievable.

Of course, people like to bring up the Kennedy's, but they are born into wealth and all of them are very philanthropic as a family and are well known to fight for the little man. Edwards, on the other hand, has spent his life suing others and raking the cash in, but now starts talking about poverty. I'm glad he's seen the light, however, but this spread of his will be seen in campaign ads from the opposition, unfortunately.

5. Will his anti-poverty message fly?
I mean Edwards has staked his claim on his poverty issue. I know that Ned Lamont and his wife were worth upwards of $200M. Crazy money but Lamont was an entire package candidate and he didn't make eradicating poverty his central mesaage.

Nothing against wealth myself, but such excesses from Edwards is a little bit too much for my taste. just sayin.

10. I don't have a problem with his house.....
as it shows that a hardworking individual can start out in One America
and climb up into the other America and realize the American Dream.

I have no issue with that concept. It is what makes America the most attractive country to live in.

This is the Land of the Free. Folks should be able to do what they want with their money as long as they have paid their taxes....

I'm much more concerned about his Foreign policy judgment than I am about his house.

The talk of this silly house business obscures the reality of his lack of depth in the arena of big boy Foreign policy....and that's a shame.

12. Why is this an issue? Should candidates have a vow of poverty?
Edwards is a wealthy man. That doesn't make him "evil". Did you ever figure out that our Founding Fathers were all very wealthy? The only President who wasn't wealthy in at least 100 years was Truman. All the others are...what...????

This is not to say that Edwards should be necessarily measured up to Truman or whatever. Where he lives and what he does in his private life is his own business.

If that was Gregg Allman's house, would you be as equally shocked?

13. It's ultimately a false issue
Either John Edwards is sincere in his committment to fight poverty or he isn't, and I am not about to accuse him of being insincere about that. However for whatever it shouldn't be worth, it will play out as a minor political liability if Edwards becomes our nominee. It simply will, only because Edwards has made such a strong point out of his ability to relate to the concerns of struggling Americans who now have to worry about what will happen to their families if they are laid off for a few months and aren't able to make house payments.

John Kerry made his Viet Nam service into a centerpiece of his early campaign, so the Republicans pumped out crap about how his wounds in Viet Nam were really only scratches. The problem is that this makes gread fodder for the Jay Lenos of the world to play with. It isn't a big problem, just a run of the mill problem, but it will play out as a small self inflicted wound. Nothing that Edwards can't get past unless he suffers too many small cuts of this sort.
