http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=32805 Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) said Friday he would support the symbolic resolution opposing President Bush’s plan to escalate in Iraq, according to The Associated Press. Brownback, a candidate for president in 2008, was once a strong supporter of the president’s foreign policy.
Brownback’s defection makes him the seventh GOP senator to agree to rebuke the president’s escalation plan, according to The AP’s numbers. The Kansas senator says he supports the measure favored by Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) that expresses disagreement with the president’s plan and urges a less central role for the American military in Iraq.
Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, predicted Sunday that no more than 20 senators would support the president’s plan for escalation when the Senate debates the symbolic resolution this week, according to The New York Times. The Times places the number of GOP senators expressing doubt about the president’s plan at nine. – JS
