How many people here drive a car ...
versus walking, bicycling, taking mass transit?

How many people have oil, gas or electric -- space heating, A/C, water heating -- versus solar, wind, waste power?

What are you doing to stop global warming?

( not a donor yet so no poll )

1. No car. Apartment building uses oil heating - can't be helped.
I can only control so much of my actions - and what I can, I limit my consumption to a minimum.

8. You've changed your mind since 8:53 this morning?

That's when you posted on another thread a statement that showed you still disagreed with global warming being a man-made problem.

You should really educate yourself on this issue. Watch "An Inconvenient Truth," for starters, then tell me it's all hype.

9. I haven't turned on the heat in the apartment all season.
That has to count for something. (I got used to the ambient 60 degrees and dress warmly.)

For the car, I keep the tires properly inflated and have the motor tuned up so I avoid wasting fuel.

10. I work at home and seldom drive......
and my daughter takes mass transit to school.

We use gas heating.

I recyle.

I just got an estimate for solar panels to be installed on our roof.

To be honest with you, I am not doing enough to stop Global Warming....but I promise to do more in the immediate future as I want to set an example for my children who will inherit this earth!

12. My city has a glass/plastic recycling program
Edited on Wed Jan-31-07 03:23 PM by rocknation
And every week when I've thrown out my Sunday paper I've wished there was a paper recycling progam, too. They finally started one last month!

And just last week, I had to use my employer's shuttle service due to car trouble. It runs a commuter van from a railway station that I can easily reach by bus--but the bus service is too unreliable to depend on every day. If it weren't for that, I really could manage without a car.

13. Up until yesterday, I was driving a car...
but now to a recently diagnosed heart issue, I can no longer drive. And you know what? I'm so very cool with that. I have hated driving since I first learned but given our societies proclivity for being car obsessed, I had to do the dance.

But now no more. :) You could say I'm ahead of the peak oil curve LOL

14. Carpool to work, turn off the lights when I'm out of the room
and for 22 years we have recycled all glass, paper, metal and plastic. I could ride my bike to work but it is pretty dangerous and I have already been hit by a car once. Peace, kim

16. Some CO2 emissions information ...
We can easily stop global warming ourselves, by not driving cars and not using fossil fuel based energy in our houses ...

1997:
Transportation accounted for ~ 32% of total US CO2 emissions.
Residential energy use from stationary sources accounted for ~ 14% of total US CO2 emissions.

That is a whopping 46% of the total US CO2 emissions!

and ...

--- WASHINGTON, DC, June 28, 2006 (ENS) - The United States has five percent of the world's population and 30 percent of the world's automobiles, but the country contributes 45 percent of the world's automotive emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, according to a report released today by the advocacy group Environmental Defense.

18. Here is a calculator
http://www.conservation.org/xp/CIWEB/programs/climatechange/carboncalculator.xml

You can estimate what you are doing and see areas you can cut down.

I came in nearly 10 tons per year under the national average.

20. I have asked that myself...
and I don't think driving a car, heating your home the best you can, etc makes anyone less progressive or a bad person.

I DO think it often makes us hypocrites.

But we live in this world, we have to make the best of it, every little bit of effort DOES help, even if it's just turning the thermostat down and carpooling.

For many, economic restrictions alone make being truly eco-friendly very hard - if you rent, no control over the type of heating etc. If you're broke, no $$$ to install solar panels.

If and when I can afford to myself, I will - until that day, I'll just have to do my best.
