Rethinking the whole Biden foot-in-mouth.
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 11:53 AM by Deep13
I was listening to Randi Rhodes last night in the car. She was discussing the R hypocrisy of calling Biden a racist given their record. She said what Biden meant, but could not spell-out, was that Obama is the first Black presidential candidate who does not scare most whites. If so, that is an essentially accurate observation. Maybe we should stop being disgusted with Biden for this and go back to being disgusted with him for supporting the bankruptcy bull.

Edit: spelling

1. It bothers me how much air the Biden Gaffe is sucking up on cable news etc
It is as if there is no other news in the world than Biden's "foot-in-mouth" and Clinton's "bad men" gaffe

No Libby trial, no now bush says he is sending 48,000 troops, no nothing. Just "gaffes"

Personally I am getting real sick of this "democratic 'gaffe' obsession"

15. I've seen a few republicans
try to portray Clinton's joke as a "gaffe". They are mistaken. It was very funny, very well-received, and her follow-up explanation was even better. It certainly wasn't a gaffe.

As for Biden... yes, it was a gaffe, and it will likely derail his run - not that he had much of a chance anyway.

3. Maybe we should look at what Biden's comments say about America.
Why is it "storybook" that there's a bright, articulate, clean, good-looking black candidate? Why is Obama more "mainstream" than other prominent black politicians?

Who defines mainstream? Who defines articulate? Who defines good-looking?

Storybook means improbable. Fairy tale. That Obama's candidacy is "storybook" is America's shame.

On the other hand, storybook also speaks to white Americans' great desire not to be racist.

4. What bothers me about the whole story is the way the media ran with it
As usual, a comment that as said meant nothing offensive but the media saw a crack and drove the spike home just as they did when Governor Dean screamed. Was Obama upset?

5. Obama's official response was that Biden was not being racist.
I don't get the scream either. I liked it actually. Showed that HD was a real human being. I guess running someones mistakes are easier than actual reporting.

6. I don't know . . . I thought it was offensive
Clean?

Clean?

Clean?

:wtf:

Your interpretation, of a black candidate who doesn't scare whites, really is generous, and makes sense when you think of previous candidates who were perhaps more radical in message (i.e. Sharpton & Jackson) but . . . they WERE ARTICULATE AND CLEAN. A reference to ideology is appropriate, but . . .

Clean?

:wtf:

I think that even if his intentions are being misinterpreted, the fact that he would formulate such a sentence is disturbing. And the fact that having formulated it, he would speak it aloud really shows poor judgement.

I'm disgusted with Biden for many reasons, but this is really appalling. I think he is a waste of time.

8. Clean..
I believe he meant "clean", as in untouched by corruption or scandal. As in "squeaky clean". I was as offended as well at first, until I got to hear and read the quote in context. Just the MSM trying to put us democrats in a circular firing squad again. DON'T FALL FOR IT. The MSM news is nothing buy 85% complete lies and 15% complete fatuous bullshit.

9. Yeah, I know.
Did he mean physically clean as if Jackson, Sharpton, Chisholm and Braun had a hygiene problem? Or did he mean free from scandal and corruption as if the others had rap sheets? Either way it can't be good.

14. Exactly -- the connotation intended doesn't even matter
His comments were insulting and patronizing no matter how you look at them. As if a qualified and ethical African American candidate was some kind of anomaly, or new phenomenon. As if the only barrier in the past had been the qualifications of African American politicians, and that the problem was solved with Obama.

Biden is not adding anything to the discussion. He is dragging us backwards with his tone-deafness.

I refuse to defend him just because he is a Dem, and just because the news media are idiots. If a Repub had said such a thing, we would be outraged, and rightfully so.

11. Mighty perceptive of Randi ...
not to recognize that Obama is half-white, whereas Biden is all-white.
