Hillary Clinton vows to end Iraq war

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Senator Hillary Clinton vowed to end the Iraq war if she is elected president in 2008 and the war is still raging when she moves into the White House.

Clinton, criticized by core Democrats for her vote in the Senate to authorize the war, is facing intense pressure over her stance on the conflict as she heads onto the presidential campaign trail.

"I want to be very clear about this: If I had been president in October 2002, I would not have started this war," she said at the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting, the first chance for the party's candidates to trade direct political blows.

"If we in Congress don't end this war before January 2009, as president, I will," said the New York senator and former first lady.

"Presidents and politicians may worry about losing face, or
losing votes, or losing legacy; it is time to think about
young Americans and innocent civilians who are losing their lives."
– Senator John Kerry

3. Which is it:
A) End war in Iraq by 2009, or

B) Military intervention with regard to Iran is still a viable option.

5. Yeah, Hillary, if Bill had sent in US Marshalls to secure the ballot boxes in FL in 2000
President Al Gore would never have started the war either.

Empty rhetoric.

7. This isn't bashing Hillary.

She has the voice, and the opportunity as Senator to stand up in a bigger way to end this war. She was all but silent before running for President about ending this war, and even now it's just empty rhetoric when she's a Senator and should be using her position in the Senate to fight to end this war.

That's not bashing, thats expecting more of our candidates.

Probably just her opportunism sensing the groundswell building that is sick of this corporatist war.Be that as it may,she is on the right track. What does this say about current conditions that there is such relief and gratitude that a mainstream candidate can hear, however faintly, the people screaming at them.

11. Well, I'm smiling at the arrogance, but I LOVE the reframing.
It is now clearly out there that Bush has an out of control mess that the Democrats WILL clean up.

Completely losing the advantage point of keeping the war going so that the incoming president gets to be the one who loses a war.

NICE REFRAMING. The Republicans can't or won't, the Democrats WILL.

Now the ONLY way for Georgie to score points is to end it himself, before Mean Mommy comes in with brooms.

Can't wait till the WH announces that Hillary is aiding and abetting the "enemy."

Now I need an identical announcement from every single Democratic candidate.

12. Now all Democratic Candidates...
...need to say the same, and Hillary needs to step forward and do something NOW. She is still a day late and a dollar short, but if she puts forth a plan in the Senate now and actively tries to stop the escalation, then this is a good sign.

17. In Hillary's video clip,
She said the Senate needs 60 Votes to end this War.
I don't know how many are on board or how many they are short.

If anyone knows who they are, we should pressure the holdouts and give the Senate a hand!
