The Mitt Flopper
Romney beats Kerry in flip-flop contest

BY ELLEN GOODMAN

ellengoodman@globe.com

Last spring when the tender shoots of John Kerry's ambition were rising again like a hardy perennial, I uttered a cri de coeur or, as we say in English, a shriek: 'Stop Him Before He Kills (The Democrats' Chances) Again.''

Kerry is a good, honorable, thoughtful man but a God-awful presidential candidate. And so the one person who choked up at last week's announcement that he wasn't going to run again was, well, John Kerry.

But no sooner do we celebrate the demise of one Massachusetts candidate, then up pops the next one. The unlamented former Gov. Mitt Romney is becoming a true contender, harvesting endorsements and attention in pursuit of the Republican nomination for president.

I realize that Bay State politicians -- from John Adams to Mike Dukakis -- have long suffered from Potomac Fever. But my friend Steve Crosby, dean of the McCormack Graduate School at the University of Massachusetts-Boston and a chief honcho for two previous Republican governors, says Romney suffers from ``Potomac Ebola Virus.''

3. I've been arguing with a guy on a forum for about a month now
about Romney and his flip flopping. He feels that Kerry's realizing it was a mistake to go to war makes him a huge flip flopper, while Romney claiming to be a supporter of gay rights, abortion laws, and gun control laws when he was running against a far left liberal and now saying he's pro life, supporting a ban on gay marriage, and claiming to be a member of the NRA while running for the Republican Nomination does not make him a flip flopper. "People can change!" he's always saying. Yeah, they sure change when they're worried about losing votes from the far right :eyes:

The man has no convictions whatsoever - he just wants power.

4. Mitt is a hypocrite and a no - brainer
Mitt made 200 appointments to State jobs before he left office.

I have serious doubts and reservations, Mitt can find
his way to Logan and buy a one way ticket to Utah!

Mitt the drip! He sure isn't a scrapper just a Republican puppet.

7. Goodman has it wrong like most of the political hacks. Kerry wasn't choking up
about not running, he was remembering his time from the Vietnam War and having to repeat the same question, "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" Media Matters has refuted this lie,

As for no one being upset over his announcement not to run, well I know a lot of people out side of the DLC and the Washington power people who were very upset about it.

And, Kerry ran a good campaign. I didn't see the likes of Clinton or some others like Vilsack and Richardson challenging the President in 04, that is because they new it was going to be tough.
