Obama on immigration
Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 09:39 PM by LuckyTheDog
Barack Obama has a good quote about immigration in his book. He talks about having met a seven- or eight-year-old girl named Christina who acted as a translator between Obama and her parents:

"We have a right and a duty to protect our borders. We can insist to those already here that with citizenship comes obligations -- to a common language, common loyalties, a common purpose, a common destiny. But ultimately the danger to our way of life is not that we will be overrun by those who do not look like us or do not yet speak our language. The danger will come if we fail to recognize the humanity of Christina and her family -- if we withhold from them the rights and opportunities that we take for granted, and tolerate the hypocrisy of a servant class in our midst; or more broadly, if we stand idly by as America becomes increasingly unequal, an inequality that tracks racial lines and therefore feeds racial strife ... and which ... neither our democracy nor our economy can long withstand."

3. I like this. I think the nationalists forget to look at the immigrants as people
they are just some group. like numbers. Not human beings. My mother is from France so I have a personal experience with the immigration thing. She came legally but, never became a citizen out of choice. She did not want to give up the last connection to France. It was just too emtional.

4. I don't have a problem with immigrants coming here...
...My problem is with Bush and his attempt to open our borders wide open. As long as Obama isn't for that NAFTA Superhighway that supposed to begin contruction next year...I'm all good.

5. "Tolerate the hypocrisy of a servant class in our midst . . ."
Anyone who lives in Southern California has tasted the ugliness of this hypocrisy up close. I'm always amazed and disgusted at the enthusiasm with which most Orange County residents brag about their "Spanish gardener" or "Maria at the front desk." I wonder who wipes their asses for them.

Those people who scream about illegal immigration the loudest sure seem to like the cheap labor . . .

7. Wow....This man is so eloquent. That's exactly how I feel too.
And something I've always wanted to say in response to Lou Dobbs. I could never have put it so well.
