2. as I posted before
"We will launch a nationwide public relations blitz that will be conducted on the pages of the New York Times, as well as in Catholic newspapers and periodicals. It will be on-going, breaking like a wave, starting next week and continuing through 2007. It will be an education campaign, informing the public of what he did today. We will also reach out to our allies in the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist communities. They worked with us before on many issues, and are sure to do so again. What Edwards did today will not be forgotten."

The Church was SUPOSEDLY against the war in Iraq, too bad he didn't put this much effort into stopping that!

5. Oh man, he is not the catholic church -
He is just an asshole.

WE are the catholic church in america - not him.

And WE will speak - he is just hot air.

What Edwards did was stupid, to be sure - but it was a lapse in political judgement, not character - I don't think Edwards is a bad guy - just not so smart.

This is the best example I can think of - Christmas eve 2004 - I went to midnight mass - like many did. At my parish they had a foreign priest and he went on about the virtue of america standing up in Iraq. I got up and walked out in the middle of the "sermon" and I wasn't alone - a lot of people did. He didn't last too long at the church.

Now my kid had just gotten ambushed in Samarra - I had good reason to be upset by such words - but most didn't have kids in the deal - they were just offended by the sermon.

You say the church is supposedly offended by the war - it is a hell of a lot more than supposedly man.

6. I realize he doesn't
represent the entire Church BUT almost no one in the church, not even the current Pope tries as hard toend the war in Iraq or the death penalty as much as they screech about abortion and gays and forcing their religion on government. They also many times back brutal right wing dictators. I know there are many many good Catholics...Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker House comes to mind...but the leadership is definately lacking.

8. The "church" is always directed by the people.
Cause we are the church.

Man - I do not like this pope - I know some decades ago he was just another target in my fathers gunsights - you know??

It is difficult for me to think past that - I admit it.

But you understand - the way it works - when the church issues an edict, it stays that way until it is changed. So when they say the war was wrong, they don't have to do it more than once.

And they did that.

You know catholics - we believe in right to life - I do. There is great debate in polite catholic society about it - certainly about birth control, and more than you might think about when exactly life begins. There are many, many pro choice catholic groups in the US - all in direct conflict with stuff that came out of the vatican.

But there is NO catholic that doubts killing an 18 year old is directly in conflict with our core belief that there is a right to life. None.

I guess I am one of the cafeteria catholics - but you know, we cafeteria catholics are the majority in the United States - in one form or another.

3. He does represent the 350,000 members of the
Catholic League. Maybe about 0.5% of Catholics.

7. There are several here today condemning Edwards and defending Donohue.
Here is my opinion. Donohue threatened to destroy a Democratic candidate through the media.

If the people in his group don't like it, they have an obligation to tell him to shut up or to fire his ass.

9. Who died and made Bill Donahue pope?
I must have been on vacation the day that happened because I don't recall anyone anointing him an official spokesman of the Catholic church.
