concert with a major surge in American troops and reinstatement of the draft (assuming an attack on Iran).

I've been asking some serious questions lately on Iran. How the hell will the US subdue Iran on a ground level? I mean a major mob of pissed off muslims will not necessarily be good for Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Israel, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt, among others.

My thinking: The split of Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) duties has been a power play for the US in the UN. The US has made concessions in order to negotiate the split of the DPKO part of which will be now be under newly confirmed Lynn B Pascoe...

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday appointed more than a dozen senior officials as he attempts to make a clean break from the previous UN administration, including a former US ambassador to head the influential political affairs post.

Ban appointed B Lynn Pascoe as undersecretary general for political affairs, replacing Ibrahim Gambari of Nigeria who served under former secretary general Kofi Annan. Ban took over the UN leadership on January 1 and has been forming his own new team since.

and the historical leader France.

UN sources said that as head of an expanded UN political arm (DPA), Pascoe would takeover some functions currently handled by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), including disarming former combatants in post-conflict situations, procurement and peace mission support.Text

Pascoe's appointment had been expected since last month but was delayed by weeks of internal wrangling over Ban's initial plan to put the US diplomat in charge of an expanded DPA that would have taken over some functions currently handled by DPKO.

These functions would have included disarming former combatants in post-conflict situations, procurement and peace mission support.

But the move faced resistance from developing countries which also frown on Ban's plan to restructure and streamline the far-flung UN peacekeeping operations and tighten control over disarmament matters.Text

The Democrats are the only ones capable of reinstating the draft on any level within the legislature.

There is no real proof of this other than Rangel's threat to introduce a bill.

2. It will be a relatively light force. I think even a force of 20,000 troops

under a given circumstance would be significant. NATO will fill in in Afghanistan (already started) on the East side, and the UN on the west with American troops in Tehran and South. I think they can literally force the issue by creating a dire set of circumstance in the middle East. Europe could be easily devasted by a true Islamic Uprising.

It's fun to speculate. What the Hell.
