Husb2Sparkly is in the Hospital
(I'm posting this here because this is where he posts; mods may move as you see fit.)

H2S had a heart attack this morning. He's okay. Two arteries were competely clogged, but fortunately they weren't the worst ones (right side of the heart instead of left?), and it was caught early so his heart muscle wasn't damaged. He had an angioplasty and several stents put in, and is sleeping now.

Hopefully he can come home Sunday. And then, he MUST quit smoking!!

I guess I just wanted you to know.

It's your husbnand's illness - but in many ways the toll will be heavy on you as well.

Try to take it easy when you can - to catch your breath and de-strsss.

My best wishes to both of you.

If he's going to quit smoking, please consider giving hypnosis a try - it's the one of the easiest and cheapest ways to quit smoking..........

Good Luck!

234. Yes, he must quit smoking! It makes the blood "sticky", more clot prone.
Absolutely!

Quitting will be easier once he's been without nicotine for a couple of days. It's do-able. I managed to quit in 1988, almost 20 years ago. Not easy, but not that hard once I realized that I had to quit.

Best wishes to both of you and glad you're taking such good care of your partner.

6. Oh, no!! I'm so sorry.
My own husband had a quadruple bypass this past June.

You're right, he MUST quit smoking. Tell him that the cardiologist, CICU nurses, et al, told us that the only reason Mr. Midlo is still alive is that he wasn't a smoker. The surgeon indicated if he had been a smoker, he wouldn't have been able to save him due to the thinning of the arteries.

My best to you. If you want to, you are welcome to PM me.

 and  to hubby as well. I was just going to post in the cooking and baking group about countertops and I was especially looking forward to his opinion.

You'll be in my thoughts. I'm glad to hear he is OK!!

My grandfather had a heart attack after being stung by bee's doing some work on a car he was selling car parts off of, and we thought it was a miracle because the heart attack showed the doctors a much deeper problem because arteries were completely clogged. He too was a smoker, quit about a year before this heart attack.

I hope everything works out alright for you and him!!

21. Best wishes to the both of you.
On quitting smoking: There is a new medication out called Chantix to help people quit smoking. Doctors are starting to prescribe it a lot.

I work in a pharmacy and several of our customers are now on Chantix and say that it has been very helpful. One gentleman has been smoke free for 4 months now.

Apparently the drug works by blocking the brain's absorbtion of the nicotine, so it takes away the urge to smoke. Not all insurances are covering Chantix yet, but the cost of it would probably equal what people spend on cigarettes.

It might be worth a try.

I smoked for years, and I quit cold turkey with that. 4 out of 5 freinds had the same result (I was 5th in line, I heard about it through them) He undoes the smoking trance in your brain pretty good. Don't know how, but it works.

Sometimes it's better that way - catch the problem during a milder episode. This happened to one of my friend's husbands - he recovered from the smaller heart attack and probably warded off a larger one.

(Good luck to him w/the 'quitting smoking'...sometimes the 'scared straight' method works R E A L L Y well...faster than the patch, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall addictions in a single bound..... ;-) ~ seriously, sometimes something as serious as a heart attack, that you survive, makes it very very easy to throw those bad habits away for good.

42. Sorry to hear, I must say that in Europe, the first thing that is
prescribed when a person has a heart attack is....

fish oil, 1000mg/day

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/03/health/03fish.html?ex=1317528000&en=1e953e11bac34784&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
“It is clearly recommended in international guidelines,” said Dr. Massimo Santini, the hospital’s chief of cardiology, who added that it would be considered tantamount to malpractice in Italy to omit the drug.

Also, I might add that Manapol, a derivative of Aloe Barbadensis, was awarded a patent by the European Union for the removal of cholesterol plaque by immune system activation.

http://sec.edgar-online.com/2004/03/19/0000926236-04-000044/Section2.asp

The Company also received the grant of European Patent Application under No.
0611304, having the date of publication and mention of the grant of the
patent of September 15, 1999. This European Letters Patent claims the use
of acetylated mannan for the regulation of blood cholesterol levels and for
the removal of plaque in blood vessels. A patent was also issued in South
Korea. Applications are pending in Canada and Japan.

Tell him my stepfather, a heavy smoker, had a heart attack at age 62 and his heart stopped. They revived him, did a bypass, and he never smoked again. He lived to be 88 years old, longer than any other man in his family. Not smoking added years to his life.

83. Oh no, not the Clown Dude!
Glad he's OK, thanks for the heads-up, Sparkly. Husb2 is one of my favorites here. It's great there was no damage.

My 78 year old mother had a couple of arteries clogged. We found out she had a problem when a clot lodged in her right eye. That could have been worse. Anyway, 2 main arteries that supply blood to the head and arms were clogged right where they connect to the aorta. One was fixed with a stint, but they had to open her up 2 weeks ago to replace the other section with a synthetic artery because that side was too clogged.

She's doing fine now, just sore.

You might have an interest in this month's National Geographic. The main subject is Mending Broken Hearts. Here's a link:

http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0702/feature1/

Tell Husb2 to hurry back. I enjoy his frequent rants.

How frightening. But it's SO good to hear he's recuperating. MAKE him take care of himself. And don't wear yourself out in the process.

And you tell him he CAN quit smoking! I did it last summer. Boy howdy did it suck. But I took a 3-week RV vacation, away from the routine, away from the computer (mostly), able to sleep when I felt the urge. It was sort of tough to come back to reality at home and not pick it up again, but not having any in the house helped. He can do it too. Tell him he owes you. :)

A real scare for both of you ... I'm glad they got him there in time. Are you okay?

My neighbor said that she was basically running on adrenaline for 2-3 days after her husband had his. She couldn't eat and barely slept, and only let her kids put her to bed when they pointed out that she'd placed her uneaten dinner on top of the car to cool so she could put it in the freezer, forgot about it, and drove all the way to the hospital ... amazingly the pan was still on the car roof when she got there, though they never did find the lid to it!

Don't know how we'll get by in the Cooking forum until he gets back! Give him a hearty get well from me and tell him that smoking can be kicked. I smoked for 40 years & quit last March after failing uncountable times. I finally got too sick to smoke. Once that was 'achieved' I had no problem. Wish you both the very best.

230. SMOKING is DEADLY... my ex-husband died in December 2006 at age 70.
He smoked for decades, had a heart attack, then a pacemaker, then bladder cancer, and lung cancer, then it spread everywhere. Then he was dead in eight months.

Beg him to stop smoking -- scream, yell, get the doctors to yell... whatever it takes.

I wish you both well. In peace,

Radio Lady in Oregon

233. Get Well & Strong, Husb2Sparkly
and a hug for the two of you! :grouphug: My husband too must quit smoking and has been procrastinating it for about 10 years. I just yelled at him, 'cause I love him. Maybe we can start an online quitters' together thing? (I don't smoke but I used to and it was tough to quit.)

Tell dear Husb that I love him so and want everything good for him. And you, too, hon. You both mean so much to us.

I'm so sorry that I couldn't reply sooner. I've been down with a virus since Friday. But this was nothing compared to what you've two sweeties are going through.

Thank you for letting us know. You both are going to be in my thoughts every day. Speedy recovery dear friend!

246. A friend of mine who smoked at least 2 packs a day and is now
65 yrs old, has apparently quit (I say quit because it's only been a month) using the new drug Chantix. Listen, if this guy quit then this drug is some kind of miracle. Ask your hubby's doctor about it because my friend tried every thing known to man to quit and this is the only thing that seems to be working.

248. Stinky's Back
A little chastened, a little scared, a little humbled, a little sad, a little wistful ........ and a whole lotta grateful.

I'm grateful first and formost to my wife, who has been there every step of the way. My kids and my future daughter-in-law, who is so very special to us all.

The heart attack was a no bullshit heart attack. The fact that I'm alive is a bullet dodged. Stents were used, no bypass - this time.

Changes are called for. I will endeavor to do what's needed.

Demon Tobacco and I have more than a few 'prayer sessions' in our future, no doubt.

My daily pill intake has become far more colorful.

And then there's this thread ........ Sparkly brought a print-out of this thread to me in the hospital. Wherever it was at about 8.30 yesterday morning is what I read. To say I was touched is to understate by several orders of magnitude. To each and every one of you who responded: Thank you.

For my part, I am using my experience as a basis to petition GWB and his gang of thugs to vacate the people's house in the name of my personal well being. My blood pressure and my heart simply can't tolerate their being there any longer.

Please feel free to join with me in wishing them a speedy departure.

I just gave you a little spare heart (hehee, sorry) and a heartfelt wish that you and my husband will kick your scary habits and take care of yourselves. It took a hospital visit to see someone else to get me to quit 13 years ago...!
