Why I am running for an at-large seat on my city council.
COVINGTON, LA. I am a local attorney and social justice advocate and I have just qualified as the lone Democratic candidate in a field of five seeking two at-large seats on the Covington City Council.

The short answer to why I am running for Covington's City Council is simple, I love Covington. It is my home. I have planted roots here and have made a personal investment in the City's future. It is where we are raising our daughter and I want Covington to be the best possible home town for her that it possibly can be. It is also where I intend to live out the best years of my life and I want to contribute what I can to ensuring that Covington remains a safe, progressive, prosperous, culturally significant, and vibrant community for us all.

A post-Katrina world calls for a new, progressive voice on the City Council; a voice which offers new ideas to address challenges, both old and new, which confront us all as we move forward into the "new normal". I will contribute that fresh outlook which is now required and which will open community debate and thoughtful discussion on the issues we must tackle in the days, months, and years ahead.

I have the qualifications, credentials, educational background, and passion to competently represent the good people of Covington. I have successfully participated in private business, public service, political activism, and community organizing. I bring a wealth of real life, relevant experience to the Covington City Council which clearly and concretely sets me apart from the other candidates in the race. As a mom, I am committed to the quality of life of our community and the example we set for the next generations. My record firmly establishes that I am willing to fight for all of the people who cherish Covington and call her home.

3. This is a good intro for the voters in your district to know.
Make sure you pick 2 but no more than 3 important goals that you hope to accomplish. I would suggest 2 as your focus. Be prepared for other issues that you need to respond but keep the focus on the 2 goals.

When you put out your resume keep it short. When you do press releases keep it short. Don't put anything in your resume or press releases that doesn't need to be there. Put out regular press releases so that your name is in the media. Spell check and grammar check!!!! Go through it yourself and then have 1 or 2 other people go through it that you trust. Don't trust any software spellchecker because it won't determine if the word is the correct word. It only checks to see if the word is spelled correctly.

Don't get off on a tangent on anything that doesn't and should not involve council business. Find out what is the job of City Council. Discuss your campaign with State Representatives and State Senators (or whatever their position is for state legislature) as to what they can do for you once you are elected. That should give you a better understanding of the job.

4. And... since our lives are ruled by laws
we need attorneys who understand the legal world and use it for the common good.

Good luck. When will the citizens of Covington go to the polls?
