Left-wing fanatics are as dangerous to this country as right-wing fanatics
Sadly, Americans see them as no better than right wingnuts either.

55. Now there is a start
I actually live near Durham. You would be correct in that more extreme left wingers abandoned the whole concept of innocent until proven guilty. There was never really a case, and it is looking like the "victim" made it all up.

That said, the lacrosse team players played the role of slothful rich brats all too well. Had the team not had a long history of acting like jerks, people in the community would have not been so quick to judge them.

Illegel immigration must stop NOW, and, yes, the extreme left wing pretends it isn't a problem, that it isn't a security issue or that such readily available cheap labor has NOTHING to do with the extinction of blue collar jobs that pay living wages. I don't blame the immigrants, because they are just trying to survive and improve their lives, but I do blame both extreme left and right wingers for ignoring the elephant in the room.

Can't comment on your last point, because I don't know what your talking about.

60. Amnesty may be the most practical option
Logistically it's impossible to deport 10 million people. Nobody wants to leave things the way they are (except for businesses that hire illegals) because it leads to worker exploitation.

I think that we either have to have amnesty or some sort of guest worker program that allows those immigrants already here to gain legal status (even if it only is temporary) and entitles them to minimum wage and forces them to pay taxes as well.

4. But the difference, surely, is that there are no left-wing fanatics in American mainstream politics?
Even Bernie Sanders would be centre-left in most Europaean countries.

There may be some far-left groups; but they don't have any power. Whereas there are plenty of right-wing fanatics in politics, starting with Bush and Cheney; and the terrifying 'Christian Right' groups seem to have huge influence on the voters.

8. I might agree if there were anything near 1:1 proportions,
but there isn't. The ratio is WAY out of balance in favor of the RW, thus placing the LW fanatics on the endangered species list. And, as with any endangered species, as they become fewer and fewer, each one becomes more valuable. What would we be if there were none at all? We'd be something entirely different without them.

Yes, I've seen them around, active at various demonstrations. They CAN be a complete PAIN IN THE ASS, especially since intolerance is one of their salient characteristics, but that intolerance will always keep them isolated and, hence, more tolerable to the rest of us. But I think the pain they cause is essential to our self-awareness.

10. what policy or action do "Left-wing fanatics" support? Marriage?living wage?Universal Health? Taxes
not cut for the rich? Tax cuts for the middle class and poor? Tax the 90% of the income of the rich - investment earnings - at the same rates that wage earnings are taxed? Federal election campaigning paid by government instead of rich and corporate buying influence? Social Security investing in non-government bonds so the money is not stolen by the rich to finance tax cuts for the rich? Hiring for government jobs based on merit rather than party loyalty or Daddy's influence? Judges that respect human rights as much as they respect property rights.

Perhaps you can tell us what the left - any on the left - are doing that is dangerous - or even close to starting a war costing a trillion and 3000 Americans and 500,000 Iraqi's because your daddy was a target of their dictator at one time?

I sure wish I knew what danger the left posed, so I could understand the concentration of the attention of the FBI on posts on DU - while the FBI is ignoring calls for insurrection against the United States over at Free Republic.

41. ROFLMAO. Arianna Huffington was once a rightie and pal of Newt Gingrich...
...not so long ago.

Some of us still remember that -- especially people in my congressional district who were here when she pushed her then-husband into flooding his campaign with more money than we'd ever seen before, pushing out the old Repub who'd held the office for 20 years, and going to Washington hardly knowing why he was there. She, on the other hand, palled around DC with the Neocons.

Huff Post is all well and good, but it does seem a strange departure.

that a centrist starts to look like Stalin to the RW fundies. At least that's the way their rhetoric goes.

This country NEEDS a serious lurch to the left just to get it back to the center.

36. Let's remember that RW fundies are nazis, that makes anyone who
...they disapprove of or who refuses to go along with their party line are left wing fanatics. I expect that somewhere tucked away in some secret vault is a Republican Twenty-Five Point Program which reads very much like the one adapted by Hitler's Nazi Party:

<snip>
The Twenty-Five Point Program of the N.S.D.A.P., Feb. 24, 1920

1. We demand the uniting together of all Germans, on the basis of the people's right of self- determination, in a greater Germany.

2. We demand . . . . the annulling of the Peace treaties drawn up in Versailles and St. Germain.

3. We demand land and territory (colonies) to provide food for our nations and settlement areas for our population surplus.

4. Only a fellow German can have right of citizenship. . . . no Jew can be considered to be a fellow German.
. . . . . . . .

7. We demand that the first priority of the state should be to ensure that its citizens have a job and a decent life. If it should prove impossible to feed the whole population of the state, foreign nationals (with no right of citizenship) should be repatriated.

8. Any further immigration of non-Germans must be prevented. We demand that all non- Germans who have entered the Reich since 2nd August 1914 be forced to leave immediately.
. . . . . . . . .

11. (We demand) abolition of income for unemployed people or for those making no effort.
. . . . . . . . . .

13. We demand the nationalization of all publicly owned companies (Trusts)
. . . . . . . . . .

16. We demand the establishment and maintenance of a healthy middle class. The large department stores should be immediately place under the control of the local authority and should be rented out to small businesses at low prices.. . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . .

18. We demand an all-out battle against those who damage the common interest by their actions- --criminals against the nation, profiteers, racketeers etc. should be punished by death, without regard for religion or race.
. . . . . . . . . .

21. The state must ensure the general good health of its citizens, by providing for mothers and children, by banning child labor, by ensuring the development of physical fitness, by making it a legal obligation to participate in sport or gymnastics and by providing all possible support for associations involved in instructing the youth in physical fitness.
. . . . . . . . . . .

23 We demand a legal battle against open political slander and its publication in the press. In order to make possible the establishment of a German press, we demand that:
a) Newspaper editors and employees whose work appears in German must have German citizenship rights.
b) Non German newspapers must have the express permission of the state before they can appear in Germany. They must not be printed in German.
c) .......Newspapers which are deemed to be against the common good should be banned. We demand a legal battle against any art and literature which exerts a harmful influence on public life and we demand that all institutions which contravene the afore- mentioned standards be closed down.

24. We demand the freedom of religion in the Reich so long as they do not endanger the position of the state or adversely affect the moral standards of the German race. As such the Party represents a positively Christian position without binding itself to one particular faith. The Party opposes the materialistic Jewish spirit within and beyond us and is convinced that a lasting recovery of our people can only be achieved an the basis of:

Common Good before Personal Gain

25. In order to achieve all of the aforegoing we demand the setting up of a strong central administration for the Reich..............
The leaders of the party promise to commit themselves fully to the achievement of the above aims, and to sacrifice their lives if need be.

32. I would also add the pro-establishment whores to that list....
...and they can be Democrats and Republicans alike. Self-avowed yellow dogs, fiercely loyal to their party power brokers and corporate masters, intentionally taking ideologically moderate (middle-of-the-road) stances, but as mean as bulldogs and ready to look down their noses about anyone who disagrees with them, whether it's someone from their left flank or their right flank.

Perfect examples of people who fall into this category: Joe Lieberman, Zell Miller, James Carville, Paul Begala, Terry McAuliffe, and a modest chunk of some individuals on DU.

(Note: I don't include "everyone from the DLC" in this category, because I don't believe it's fair to claim that every member of the DLC necessarily fits this description)

56. Hold on, the statement isn't exactly wrong.
"FANATICS" from either wing of the party are dangerous.

An example of a "left wing fanatic" would be someone who commits vandalism, or some other crime in the name of their view. You don't like SUV's, that is fine, but don't break into a car lot and set fire to all the SUV's. Just as religious nuts don't have the right to tell me about my faith, so non-religious nuts (such as myself who believes religion is evil) don't have the right to tell someone else that they don't have right to believe however they believe.

The question we should be focusing on now, is what % of the left is made up of "fanatics" as opposed to the % of the right?

As it currently stands, the right's agenda is being set by the "fanatics" who want to force their views upon you, send your children off to die for their profits and deny people their most basic rights and freedoms.

The left tends to dismiss the fanatical wing of the party and no mainstream democrat embraces the left wing fanatics agenda. (I have not heard any democrat call for the end of all corporations, the end of religion, etc..etc..)

However, I have heard "mainstream" republicans call for the elimination of free speech by claimning disent and discussion is not allowed, call for enactment of religion and forcing their personal religious beliefs on others, heck the "president" has blatantly ignored very clear constitutional provisions and protections, claiming that some vague and phony war on terror gives him absolute rights and control without oversight.

Hell, some democrats have even signed onto much of the right wing fanatics agenda just so they seem to be inline with "mainstream" values.

So, Yes, I agree with the OP 100%, left wing "fanatics" are just as dangerous as right wing "fanatics"; however, it is the right wing fanatics currently dominating one of the political parties in this country, thus, they are the real "threat".
