Anti-Bush protesters in Chattanooga, TN forced to move & pro-Bush allowed to stay
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 03:16 PM by CottonBear
in front of the Convention Center in downtown Chattanooga where *Bush met with supporters yesterday.
I think that Ethan Sklom and the other anti-Bush protesters should contact the ACLU immediately.

Protesters, Supporters Demonstrate Near Convention Center During President’s Visit
by Judy Frank
posted February 21, 2007

When Chattanooga resident Ethan Sklom learned last week that President George Bush was going to visit here, he knew immediately that he would be on hand for the occasion, he said.

So by 11 a.m. Wednesday, well before the President and his motorcade arrived at the Convention Center, Mr. Sklom was standing on the sidewalk at the intersection of M.L. King Boulevard and Chestnut Street, wearing the rubbery George W. Bush mask he bought last Halloween.

...snip...

Mr. Sklom said he was part of a group of protesters who originally gathered directly across the street from the Convention Center, about a block away from a group of Bush supporters. But a police officer confronted his group and demanded that they move three blocks away, he explained, as other protesters nodded in agreement.

“The group supporting the president was allowed to stay where they were, he said, “but when we asked the police officer why we had to move, he just said, ‘Because I say so,’ ” Mr. Sklom said indignantly.

Check out this prop-Bush e-mail posted by a Laura Crane in the opinion section of The Chattanoogan.com. In typical FReeper form, she can't write properly, makes no sense and seems to be delusional. I grew up in Chattanooga. The super wealthy conservatives and middle class freeper wingnuts outnumber Democrats and liberals. (I made some of the text bold for emphasis.)

Wednesday will go done in the history book as the day President Bush came for lunch. It was a day for Chattanooga to shine in the spotlight.

The news showed him visiting Erlanger, the Trade Center and then Porker's Bar-B-Que. The Chattanoogan.com has wonderful pictures of Air Force 1 flying over the city and taking off from Lovell Field. The young lady who got an volunteer award was on the top of the list for the President. I hear that things went off without a hitch.

Granted President Bush has his downfalls, but so did former President Clinton. I do not remember former President Clinton taking time out to visit the Scenic City. He was busy lying about Monica and other things. I cannot think of a past president who did not lie about things while he was in office. One might not be crazy about Bush, but that's how I feel towards Clinton.

Most of the protesters looked too young to vote. I could be wrong, but they did. I know that does not have anything to do with protesting against the war. One of the protesters said that they will get back at Bush in 2008. I laughed so hard when I told myself that he will not be there.

I am a Bush supporter. I am glad that he cared enough to come to our fair city. We have a wonderful city that needs the attention and to shine in the spotlight.

Bush did not put this country in the toilet - it was going that way before he came into office.

I was glad that I did not work downtown today with the traffic jams and the roads that were closed down. What a headache. I felt for the people who had to brace for his visit. The employees at the airport, Erlanger and other places were in for a busy day.

Thanks, Mr President, for visiting our Scenic City.

country right down in the toilet where he resides, all right.

And those stupid assholes that think he didn't are just as bad as bush is.

4. I suppose free speech zones are only for pro-*Bush supporters.
You'd think the pro-*Bush people would at least stand up for freedom of speech for all citizens but no, they are exposed as the stupid, facist, moranic sheeple that they really are.

5. Such total ignorance!
The comments do show that some of the fair citizens of Chattanooga are not fooled by the chimp in chief. I wonder about the protesters. In our village of 4,000 we have to complete an application to get permission to protest. We go with paper in had when we stand on the corner. If we were questioned, which we never have been we would stand our ground. What has America come to?

8. Internal inconsistencies - typical of Freeper thinking
First she says "I hear that things went off without a hitch." Then she says, "I was glad that I did not work downtown today with the traffic jams and the roads that were closed down. What a headache."

In freeper-world, where up is down and black is white and 1+1=5, this is NOT a contradiction. Understanding this explains why freepers alone still support the chimp.

Good Riddance, Mr. President - And Response
posted February 21, 2007

I was as excited about President Bush coming here as I get about a trip to the dentist.

The worst president in history pays our city a visit. It's definitely not something I will be bragging about.

I was amused to see that a group of supporters were allowed to be right there in front of where Bush was, but a group of protestors were made to move three blocks away from where Bush was. That's Bush's version of democracy.

I'm glad he left, and I hope he never comes back.

I was appalled that Bush came to visit Chattanooga. When will people in this country wake up?

This war of his should be fought by his family. Why not send his own daughters off to war?

We are fighting a war which is an impossible situation - a real "Catch 22" situation.

WRCB showed a lot of coverage on Bush's supporters, but only a minimal amount of the protesters. We have every right to protest, and disagree.

Bush will be remembered as the worst president ever, in my opinion.

Could it be that there were not that many protestors for WRCB to show?

Maybe the voices of the vocal and belligerent minority isn't worth showing?

Maybe the people of Chattanooga support the president more than those that do not? Who knows?

11. My Mom lives there and voted for Corker.
She was appalled that I said I had been supporting Ford in the race. (I live in GA but grew up in Chattanooga so I try to keep with the politics.) I'm sure she would never vote for a black candidate.
Usually, I avoid discussing politics with my Mom.

Chattanooga is quite conservative. There are huge numbers of extremely wealthy (old money and new) people along with major businesses and industries. I went to a private school with the Olan Mills (Photo Studio) girls, the Krystal Restaurant heiresses and the North American Royalties Oil heiress among others. One local man was a Reagan administration official. SO yes, it is a city of many Republicans. The local, mostly black, urban population is gaining in representation in the city government. The suburbs are almost all white. I grew up in an exclusive, small town Chattanooga suburb that to this day has no black people living there that I know of. The only blacks that were there when I was a kid were the maids that came up on the bus to clean houses (including ours.)

bring us Corker as the city voted for Ford. It was the numbskulls out here in the county who voted Corker in. :hi:

14. Once again, civil rights are officially denied
And nobody will pay any kind of penalty for this government abridgement of people's constitutional rights (so important they're in the First Amendment) by the Chattanooga municipal government.

For shame, Laura Crane and all like-minded Chattanoogans.

15. My favorite quotes from the first article.
“The group supporting the president was allowed to stay where they were, he said, “but when we asked the police officer why we had to move, he just said, ‘Because I say so,’ ” Mr. Sklom said indignantly.

Three blocks away, standing on a small grassy knoll directly across the street from the Convention Center, Bush supporter Billy McCurdy was likewise vehement.

He and his brother, Ronald, drove the 45 miles from their homes in Fort Payne, Ala., to Chattanooga because they thought it was important to support the President, Mr. McCurdy said.

“What I like about him is his Christian values,” he said. “He’s just about the best president we ever had . . . and his wife Laura is just about the prettiest first lady.”

1) Grassy knoll????
2) The McCurdy Brothers from Fort Payne, Alabama. She's so purty!

By the way, Chattanooga is my birthplace and sometimes hometown.

Here's a pic of the Shrub in front of Porkers BBQ, also Bob Corker's fav hangout when he was mayor. I have actually had the undistinguished honor of meeting him.

Feel free to caption.

17. Hi dammitann! I a fellow former Chattanoogan. I go up there every few months.
Chattanooga is study in contrasts between the super wealthy, old money business and industry leaders and the vast freeper hordes. I grew up in an all-white suburb of the city and attended private school there. My dad was a surgeon, an AMA lobbyist, a faithful Republican and a card carrying member of the John Birch society.

I don't know how I ended up as the only liberal or Democrat in my family! :eyes:

Did you know that Samuel L. Jackson, the movie actor, is also a native Chattanoogan?

19. Nice to meet you!
Yes, I grew up here, but I have moved around a little and come back. Chattanooga never really changes. It is a study in contrasts. I, too, grew up in an all-white suburb and attended the first magnet shcool there. I have lived dowtown and on the northshore and now I live out in the country suburbs.

You seem to have narrowly escaped a grim and serious future as a Repug, good for you!

I did know Sam L. was a native, I have walked by what was once his grandmother's house many times.

22. Ms. Crane, proud knuckledragger, Bush** is a liar and the
consequences of his lies have proven to be quite deadly, and you'll be paying for the debt he has racked up for the rest of your life. Offspring? Indebted for life, too, while their options for education and employment dwindle, but you go ahead and be proud!

Yes, there were Young Dems from UTC there, but there were many 'older', apparently wiser than you could ever hope to be, protesters there, too! www.hamdems.org

Hey cottonbear I haven't seen you in a while. :hi:

I'll have to try to get the scuttle on what went on with the police officer forcing people to move. I'm rather surprised that the new police chief went along with that, except that the SS and homeland security have been around for a while planning for this.

While you're browsing around the chattanoogan, did you happen to see that Erlanger (I despise that place and have for years) was accused of $120 million in fraud and has agreed to pay $40 million? People are pretty steamed about that, too. Crooks of a feather commit fraud together?

Tell that to the pukers like Mean Jean Schmidthead who are pissing and moaning about Pelosi's use of a government aircraft and how wasteful it is. And it wasn't even Pelosi's idea BTW.
