Vice President Cheney treated for blood clot in his leg after experiencing discomfort in calf.

He needs to be treated at Walter Reed. Oh that's right Walter Reed is only for brave men and women that served, not cowards that received 5 deferments. Cowards with 5 deferments get treated in places in upscale hospitals with great conditions.

The sixty-six year old vice president "experienced mild calf discomfort," according to the AP, "and in light of his recent prolonged air travel, he visited his doctor's office at the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates this afternoon."

MSNBC reports that it was "potentially serious," but that the doctors found it early enough, and Cheney has already gone back to work today. The cable news network also reported that President Bush was informed of Cheney's condition before he visited the medical center.

14. There's something that doesn't make sense about this.

They don't just send you home with a prescription for coumadin, because coumadin takes some time to work -- days. In the meantime, the clot could get bigger or "throw." So the first thing they do is give the patient heparin, but that's usually done IV.

But probably Cheney was already taking coumadin -- so maybe they just increased his dose? Still, I'm surprised they'd just send him back to work. We're not getting the whole story here. Not that we ever do . . .

and do labs until he reaches therapeutic levels ...

There are also surgical options such as filters inserted in the offending vessel, and I can only assume that wasn't done as a precautionary measure because it wasn't necessary.

On edit: Cheney has an ICD (implantable cardioverter/defibrillator) which is supposed to guard against arrhythmia.

but venous thrombosis is not caused by arrythmias or faulty heart valves. You're thinking of arterial emboli that can cause strokes. A dvt is on the other side of the vascular fence and is typically caused by venous stasis.
patients with your typical dvt are rarely admitted. They are usually started on low molecular weight heparin to start and managed on an outpatient basis.

I work in the medical field. I assure you a suspected DVT is treated with great care and caution, diagnosed on Doppler ultrasound and almost always admission for a loading dose of anticoagulant therapy. At least in the hospitals I work for; maybe not yours.

and with all due respect to a fellow DU'er, but as a doc who's involved in this stuff (I do lots of doppler studies for this), as far as I know, the current standard of care is to start patients on Lovenox (low molecular weight heparin). They are then taught to self inject the stuff subQ, and followed by an anti-coag clinic.
