TIME INC possibly censors libraries
Many serials librarians have been reporting they did not receive the annual swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated? Apparently some have been told by TIME INC that a decision was made to not send them out to public institutions. Also, they have claimed they ran out of issues. In addition, one was told that they did not mail them to institutions that receive SI through a subscription agent such as EBSCO.

I add too, that we have NOT received this special issue of Sports Illustrated. I think that if you pre-pay for something you should receive it.

My information comes from the SERIALIST listserv that I belong to.

Something is rotten at TIME INC don't you think?

I will have more details as I receive them.

1. it's probably a misguided and stupid attempt
to defuse controversy. They probably figured that most libraries won't display the magazine, and those that do will be subject to protests from idiots. So they simply save the money on shipping them.

it's a bad idea, but it's also not censorship, if they don't want to send out their own magazine to subscribers, it may be fraud, but it isn't censorship.

just saying.

2. I don't think they are censoring as such.
Time is just optimizing sales by making certain anyone who wants a peek has to put their money down. My guess is that Time is stiffing libraries while making extra press runs of this issue!

7. As a librarian I can tell you that this is the incredible disappearing magazine.
That and the Consumer Reports car issue--at many libraries I've worked in we used to keep them behind the desk and hold ID until they were returned.
