UFCW National Bargaining Unity Program Scores Win In New England - 03/15/07

By Doug Cunningham

Five United Food and Commercial Workers local unions in New England have won improvements in a new three-year contract with Stop and Shop stores. They won improvements in health care benefits for part-time workers – 80 percent of the workers at the stores. Janice Williams says the health care issue was critical for workers at these stores.

: “Cause you have career part-timers. And these people are single parents that need the health care."

The coordinated effort in New England is part of a nationwide bargaining unity program among UFCW grocery workers. Over 400,000 UFCW grocery workers across the country and in Canada are negotiating new contracts throughout 2007.
