Pathfinder: An analogy to 300
Before 300, there was a trailer for a movie called Pathfinder, which looks like a similar historical-themed action-adventure. I haven't seen it yet obviously, but I doubt the 300 bashers have seen 300, so I'm in just as much a position to make a point about it.

The movie is about an early conflict between Native Americans and Vikings. The main character appears to be a child left behind by Vikings previously, who was raised by the Natives and grown up a warrior. Now the Vikings have returned for another expedition, and he fights to defend his adoptive people.

The movie obviously doesn't portray Vikings in a positive light. Going by the logic of the 300 bashers, I am of Scandinavian ancestry, therefore I should be offended by the demonization of vikings as they are my history, and watching the movie will make one want to attack Sweden or Norway. But guess what? I'm not offended.

Lesson: They're just fucking movies, and people shouldn't be sensitive still about crap that happened thousands of years ago.

2. I live in Minnesota
There's plenty of other people of similar heritage here. We'll see if there are massive complaints here when the movie opens. Somehow I doubt there will be.

7. If anything, the complaint will be about all the horns on the viking helmets
Viking helms didn't have horns.

I REFUSE TO SEE THIS MOVIE BECAUSE VIKING HELMS SHOULD BE HORNLESS.

Actually, I probably won't go see it because it looks like total plotless crap.

and for the record, I saw and enjoyed the spectacle of 300. Gorgeous use of light, like an oil painting brought to life. Aesthetically breathtaking. Plus I want to know what sort of training regimen all the actors went through!

4. Actually I think his point is accurate
it is a movie. Personally I am tired of what passes for "outrage" from the right and the left.

Be fucking outraged and then shut up. Who cares if you are outraged? I am outraged at your outrage. See how silly it gets.

But then again, in this culture where being a "victim" is a way to get power, this does not surprise me.

I worked with a Sierra Leone war survivor, age 15, who was ganged raped by the soldiers and spent 3 months in hell before she escaped with her mother. She was shot in the foot and has a 2 year old child as a result of the rapes. She is a victim. Anyone offended by the movie 300 needs to stop, think and then shut up.

This may not apply to you at all, but the level of personal offense on this message board is ridiculous.

Of all the problems in this world, the multitude of bullshit from the Bush administration and people have time to be offended by a movie.

6. haven't seen it -- won't see it -- don't care -- BUT --
more offensive to me is when others pretend to know better than person xyz about their feelings and then tell them what to feel.

8. people can think what they want, and I can think they're full of crap
I think it's ridiculous when some fundie mom in Georgia is offended by Harry Potter and tries to get it banned. I feel the same way about Iranians or anyone else being offended by 300.

9. I don't know you
and you may be a very nice person, so I really don't mean this to come out the wrong way.

Over the past couple of decades we have gone from a land where no one really gave a shit about people's feelings to the other end of the spectrum where we need to give a shit about what everyone is feeling. I would like to believe the truth is somewhere in the middle. As for what people feel about a movie, personally, I could care less. Don't go see it. Isn't that what we say about abortion? If you don't like it, don't get one?

As liberals we have blind spots. We want everyone to care about our feelings, yet honestly we don't care much for the feelings of the fundamentalist Christians who think and feel that Harry Potter or Hollywood are "bad".
