Bill and Hill appear together at million-dollar NYC fundraiser; "You are the best," he says.
NYT/AP: Clintons Make Rare Appearance Together
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: March 18, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton took the stage Sunday with her husband, the former president, at a major fundraiser that brought in over $1 million for her presidential campaign.

In a Manhattan hotel ballroom filled with New York elected officials and wealthy Democratic donors, Bill Clinton introduced his wife by describing her long career in public service beginning at Yale Law School where the couple met 35 years ago.

He said he had encouraged her then to pursue a career in New York or Chicago and is still amazed she followed him back to Arkansas, where he was eager to run for office.

''I now have met all the best people in our generation, and you are the best,'' he recalled telling her then. ''And I feel more strongly about that today than I did when I said it 35 years ago. That's why she should be president ... You'll never find anybody who will do a better job of it than she will.''

Hillary Clinton vowed to pursue several specific goals if elected president, including universal health care, preschool for every child, and making college more affordable. She also pledged to promote energy independence and drew laughs from the crowd when she described replacing ordinary light bulbs with energy-efficient models and shutting off lights to conserve power.

''I turn off a light and say, 'Take that, Iran,' and ''Take that, Venezuela.' We should not be sending our money to people who are not going to support our values,'' she said....

5. ''Take that, Venezuela." Hillary is either clueless or downright evil.
''I turn off a light and say, 'Take that, Iran,' and ''Take that, Venezuela.' We should not be sending our money to people who are not going to support our values,'' she said

Hillary is not talking about my values, or the values of the working class in America or in Venezuela. Hillary is speaking of her values, the values of the American and Venezuelan elites, the values of John Negroponte and Otto Reich, the values that led to a US instigated coup in Venezuela which thankfully failed.

We must redouble our effort to prevent this neolib/PPI imperialist version of a PNAC neocon from becoming President. Hillary will try to reconquer Latin America by either stealth or military force.

YOU, represent what I fear most, getting another Republican elected.

We had 8 yrs of Peace and Prosperity with the Clintons and I have no reason to believe we won't have it again if Hillary is elected.

and it matters not whether it is a Democratic or a Republican President that tries to put the elites back in power, they must be opposed with every fiber in our bodies.

Sounds like you want to form your own army. I'll bet Chavez would welcome you with open arms, IG.

Think I'll stay in the U.S. and enjoy the liberties I have here. At least, currently. Bush will be out of office in two years so I have something to look forward to.

You show those elites in Venezuela a thing or two. And when you want to come back to America, the land of the free, don't be surprised if you have to sneak out of Venezuela in the dark of the night to avoid being shot or thrown in prison.

19. Yeah, that was sure some ride of peace and prosperity there, eh
Especially since 500,000 innocent Iraqi civilians died between 1991 and 2000, both from sanctions and from the thrice weekly bombing runs the US made over Iraq. We were certainly prosperous as ol' Bill wrecked our social safety net with his welfare "reform" Prosperity reigned as NAFTA started sucked all the well paying manufacturing jobs out of the country. And it wasn't long before the high tech sector, perhaps our last hope for a well paying manufacturing sector in this country, got sucked over to India. Yup, prosperity reigned as the wealth gap between the rich and the rest of us widened to a record breaking chasm under Clinton. And let's not forget the appearance of that new socio-economic faction that gained record breaking number, yep, the working poor. And sadly, we really didn't get to see the news on this because of Clinton's push for the '96 Telecom Act, which allowed our media to be concentrated into literally a handful of companies, all corporate controlled, all disinclined to deliver real news.

That famed peace and prosperity was an illusion, a sham. Those with investments got rich, at least until the bust, while the overwhelming majority of people who don't invest watched as their real world wages went south, and the social safety net disappeared beneath them. Peace, well, it was more like the silence of the dead. Prosperity, a sham construction that only provided a feel good band-aid, but really didn't help.

And yes, we can expect more of the same corporate whoredom under Hillary that we saw under Bill. Everybody got pissed because Monica gave Bill a blowjob, me, I was much more pissed about Bill's felliating of corporate America at the expense of the rest of us.

23. No, Hillary doesn't share your marxist/leninist/communist ideals.
Hillary didn't have anything to do with the coup attempt in Venezuela; she is not a neocon or an "imperialist" which is a favorite word marxists love to use.

The most laughable thing you said is that Hillary will try to "reconquer" Latin America by stealth or military force. Could you provide incontrovertible evidence to support that?

Hillary has bigger fish to fry than to worry about a tin horn dictator in South America who will probably go the way of most dictators when the people get tired of him.

34. IndianaGreen is clearly a Marxist.
I don't degrade such beliefs either. I just happen to disagree with them. I also don't think Chavez is some kind of saint, even to Marxists. While he may have been democratically elected, he cozies up to figures like Ahmadenijahd etc. and, by many accounts, systematically curtails civil liberties within his own country. Just because he vaguely follows a pie in the sky quasi-Marxist economic model doesn't mean people like IndianaGreen should turn a blind eye to the reality of the situation.

37. I agree with his assessment on the bourgeoisie exploiting the proletariat
After all, the bourgeoisie own the productive means and thus exploit the proletariat, who feel as though they are getting a good deal.

As for Chavez, he was democratically elected...he's no saint..and like Senator Clinton would want with making flag-burning a federal crime, is for curtailing civil liberties in his country.

11. Hillary should read this 2004 open letter to John Kerry regarding Venezuela
President Chavez’ goal, and the goal of peaceful Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela is to invest the country’s oil wealth in the people of the nation. Already many social reforms and programs have produced impressive benefits to the great majority of the population, many of whom have lived in dire poverty for decades. For example since 1998, 3 million people have received access to potable water for the first time and another 1 million have received sewage service. The military has built or refurbished over 30 thousand homes, built 700 new schools and refurbished over 2 thousand--employing 36 thousand new teachers. Over the past year 8 hundred thousand illiterates have graduated from the second phase of a 3 phase literacy program, 28 thousand children have received free vaccinations, and 18 million patients have been seen by clinic doctors in areas that had no medical facilities just 2 years ago. Thanks to micro-credits and grassroots empowerment, there are over 10 thousand cooperatives with over 6.5 thousand members. Similarly, hundreds of thousands of dollars have gone into the hands of women-owned, small businesses and cooperatives through the Women’s Bank. Landless campesinos have received over 2.5 million acres of productive land and over 30 thousand titles have been given to urban squatters. The airwaves have been opened up to accommodate dozens of independent radio and TV broadcasters who provide much needed uncensored news. These are just some of the current national programs; there are also tens of thousands of state, local, and community projects in complement. Mr. Kerry, in the past a minority of elite controlled the oil revenues of Venezuela; now the wealth of Venezuela belongs to all Venezuelans.

On May 27 you stated, “When the referendum process presented a legitimate challenge to his leadership, President Chavez lost an opportunity to demonstrate the popular support he claims to enjoy, instead showing a troubling disregard for the rule of law.” First, we would like to ask if you know of any other country, including our own, that has provided a Presidential recall referendum measure in their Constitution? Let us point out that it was President Chavez himself who proposed that a referendum be included in the Constitution in 1999. Second we would ask you to read the rule of law. The text of the 1999 Constitution in English can be found at: http://cybercircle.org/english/constitution.html. It clearly spells out the steps for arriving at a referendum.

Chavez has followed these steps to the letter. Because this is a new Constitution and because the referendum process had never been tried before, there were many legal details that had to be worked out in court. These proceedings were absolutely necessary for defining the process and setting precedence for the future. Those advocating that Chavez “call for” a referendum vote were in effect advocating that he take a dictatorial stance over the judicial branch and diverge from the Constitution. This is the 26th Constitution of Venezuela. It is a fragile document that cannot afford to be undermined by political pressure. The Chavez government chose to stick by the Constitution and the rule of law instead of bowing to political pressure.

The signature drive for the recall came up short. Due to countless irregularities thousands of signatures were of undeterminable validity. Instead of throwing these out, the Chavez administration agreed to a repair process through which those whose signature was considered controversial, could verify their signature, thus allowing several thousands of suspect signatures to be included in the final count as well as tens of thousands of signatures to be proven fraudulent. The November 2000 elections in the US may have ended quite differently for us if a repair process had been invoked

I'm more than a little pissed that less than three months after her re-election, she's out campaigning for president when she should be working 24/7 in the Senate to rein in BushCo's excesses and illegalities and help solve some of the myriad of critical issues facing this nation and the planet . . . that's what I helped elect her to do -- not run around the country raising a million here and a million there for a presidential election two years away . . .

20. It was those "radical left-wing nuts" that warned you about Iraq
but far too many of you chose to hear the Establishment voices from the DLC and the DNC saying that it was best to put the war issue off the table for the 2002 elections in order to concentrate on bread and butter issues.

See what you got now?

Hillary's recent statements, or lack of them, on LGBT rights, keeping a US footprint of troops and bases in Iraq past 2009, Venezuela, and other issues dear to progressives, are a big warning sign that she will split the party and polarize the Left were she to become the nominee.

In the event Hillary is elected President, be prepared for antiwar demonstrations to commemorate the start of the Iraq war to take place on March 2009, March 2010, and beyond.

Remember when Nixon turned a Democratic war into a Republican one?

Hillary's interests and values are not the interests and values of the working class, nor the interests and values of the peasants and indigenous peoples of Latin America.
