Limbaugh: John and Elizabeth Edwards "turned to ... politics" instead of God after cancer news

http://mediamatters.org/items/200703230015

On the March 23 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh told listeners that former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) and his wife Elizabeth are "political people are different than you and I." Referring to the couple's March 22 announcement that Elizabeth Edwards has Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, Limbaugh said: "ost people, when told a family member's been diagnosed with the kind of cancer Elizabeth Edwards has, they turn to God. The Edwards turned to the campaign. Their religion is politics and the quest for the White House." Limbaugh later asked: "If you're Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton , how do you now attack John Edwards?" Limbaugh added: "Not a problem for Hillary, the Clinton will find a way. But Barack, it's going to be a challenge."

John Edwards: 'My Faith Came Roaring Back'
In the first of a series of interviews with presidential candidates, Edwards discusses how faith affects his decisions.
Interview by David Kuo

John Edwards, former senator from North Carolina and John Kerry's former running mate, has his eyes on the White House. His is not a long shot bid. Though far more under the radar than his two more popular rivals, Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, his is a serious effort backed with ample money and tireless campaigning. He sat down with Beliefnet's Washington editor, David Kuo, to do something he hasn't done before--talk openly and in depth about his religious faith. Watch segments of the interview or read an extended version below.

2. I don't want a leader whose decisions are "affected by faith."
I want someone who thinks clearly, critically and rationally, not some weak-minded bible-thumper who has to find solace in mythology when things go wrong. We have a government full of those now and it's not working so well.

3. Reprehensible. Would he prefer going fishing as bush did when his daughter had surgery?
Reprobate.

4. And his poor little followers nod along in approval
Societies must remain vigilant and keep this conservative sickness marginalized.

5. I must say I am surprised by the replies..........
But I think the Repubs have caused people to turn against organized religion. I like having faith in God, but organized religion is not for me.

6. How To Attack John Edwards
Limbaugh asked how Clinton and Obama can attack Edwards now that Elizabeth has Stage IV cancer. I say, the same as they would have if she didn't have it.

I would hope the Democrats would stay away from nasty personal attacks. Although I am an Edwards supporter, there are plenty of issues on which another candidate can disagree with him, or outline flaws in his plan. This doesn't make him bulletproof. It shouldn't define our primary any more than Mrs. Romney's MS should define the Republican primary.

As for faith, I too am tired of all the emphasis on God in our society. But, if some one feels it is relevant, why not talk about it? John Edwards does not try to ram his faith down our throats (as many Republicans do) and he is not trying to show it off. But, this was an interview with BeliefNet. Presumably, visitors to that site to place a higher premium on non-secular matters. So, if you want to know about how his faith has influenced his life, his decisions, go to BeliefNet. If not, well, it's not like he's going on 700 Club or something like that, or having this kind of interview on Network television.
