Conservatives begin cracking on Iraq bill

“A diverse collection of House Republicans has formed an ad hoc group to negotiate with the White House on a compromise Iraq spending bill… The group plans to hold talks with National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, who has been working behind the scenes to cement opposition among Republicans to the spending bill that would require U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq at some point.” Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) says the group “will encourage the White House to compromise on negotiations with Syria and Iran and on setting a date for withdrawal from Iraq.”

4. I have no reason to doubt they're trying; that's got to be a good sign.
Maybe they're finally as fed up as we are? Or, they're up for reelection in 08?

7. Well, all Congressmen are up for reelection in 08... good enough reason though
Bush isn't doing them any favors lately. In any sense of the word...

6. The repugs are fighting for their lives ....
.... on KO's show tonight the overall "feelings for the direction"
of the new democratic controlled congress showed a 16 point
uptick in the polls.

Over 70% of America wants out of this nightmare.

8. Some Senators have already met with Hadley and probably
said very similar things. It's all for re-election--Gilchrest was the only one to actually VOTE for the timetable in the supplemental. The rest of them are rubberstampers who are putting on a show for the folks back home.
