Cheney: Democrats Will Back Down on Iraq

By BEN FELLER
The Associated Press
Sunday, April 15, 2007; 1:39 PM

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney says he is "willing to bet" that Democratic lawmakers will back down and approve a war-spending bill that doesn't call for U.S. troops to leave Iraq. Top Democratic leaders shot back that Cheney has lost all public credibility.

With President Bush and Congress in a stalemate _ he plans to veto legislation that orders U.S. troops home, which the House and Senate plan to send him _ both sides are looking ahead. In an interview broadcast Sunday, Cheney predicted the Democrats will blink.

He said Congress will end up passing a "clean" bill that funds the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan without any troop withdrawal timetables. Democrats control Congress, but they do not appear to have the votes to override a presidential veto.

<<snip>>

Asked what would happen if they don't back down, Cheney said: "I'm willing to bet the other way _ that, in fact, they will."

"There may be some people who are so irresponsible that they wouldn't support that," Cheney said. But the majority will send Bush the bill he wants "once they've gone through the exercise and it's clear the president will veto the provisions that they want in," he said.

4. Abusers never imagine their victims will turn against them
Then again, it's an open question whether 25 years of abuse heaped on D.C. Dems has been "enough," yet...

5. And you know he's right, because....
anyone who can mistake a 300 pound lawyer wearing a bright orange body suit for a 3 lb brown quail can be counted on to be right 100% of the time.

Dick Cheney: like Mr. Magoo, but evil and pissy.

Just sayin'

Hint: lawyers don't have wings, Dick.

7. Since one of our own candidates stated that's exactly what the
Democrats will do, I can hardly fault Cheney for making such a claim, despite the contempt in which I hold him.

I hope they are proven wrong.

9. The Dems need a couple of high profile milestones.
Maybe they are already in the bill and are just not being advertised.

For example, a milestone that the surge should have to meet is that the Iraqi Parliament must be outside Green Zone protection within six months. The Iraqi Parliament must be completely under Iraqi protection by that time. That is something the average Joe/Jane can sink their teeth into. If the Iraqi government can't even protect one building/complex in six months with all-Iraqi security, how can the United States ever expect them to protect themselves?

Another thing we should do is characterize the Iraqi security dependency as a form of endless security foreign aid, a black hole liability.

Finally, and most importantly, the Dems must not hand Bush a victory. Whatever the outcome of the legislation, it needs to be made clear that this war was a disastrous mistake by an incompetent, corrupt administration.

10. It has been proven...
already that we cannot even protect the "green zone", so I don't ever see the Iraqis able to secure their own government. I do agree with what you are saying though. Use it to show the American people that we are in a no win situation.
