Thompson's campaign debut

The actor's Orange County appearance is attracting national attention.

Monday, April 16, 2007

"Law and Order" actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson– the great conservative hope for some Republicans – is getting national attention for his speech scheduled for Newport Beach's Balboa Bay Club next month.

He'll be the keynote speaker at the Lincoln Club of Orange County's 45th annual dinner. But the big fanfare you hear is because of the strong possibility that Thompson will throw his hat into the presidential race.

"Thompson will hit the campaign trail next month in advance of any formal announcement with a May 4 speech in Orange County," is how columnist Robert Novak parses the terms of the visit. Lincoln Club members must have been particularly pleased to hear Mike Allen of politico.com on CBS describe the hosting group as "one of the biggest, most important political organizations in the party."
