Edwards outpaces Clinton in Western New York
Edwards outpaces Clinton in Western New York
(Buffalo) Business First
Monday, April 16, 2007

----
Sen. Hillary Clinton has raised more money nationally than any other presidential candidate, but she isn't the frontrunner among Western New York contributors.

That distinction belongs to former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., according to a new analysis of Federal Election Commission data by the New York Times.

Edwards received $143,225 in contributions from residents of Western New York during the first quarter of this year. Clinton, D-N.Y., raised $101,360 in the region.

No other candidate -- Democrat or Republican -- drew more than $68,500 from Western New Yorkers.
(...)
The Times defined Western New York as all ZIP codes between 14000 and 14999, a territory that includes Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Rochester along with their surrounding suburbs and rural areas, as well as the western end of the Southern Tier.

Western New Yorkers gave a grand total of $411,457 to the 18 major-party presidential candidates during the first quarter of 2007, according to the paper.

The following are the 18 candidates, ranked in order of the contributions they received from Western New Yorkers during the first quarter of the year:

John Edwards, D-N.C. , $143,225
Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. , $101,360
Rudolph Giuliani, R-N.Y. , $68,500
Barack Obama, D-Ill., $29,807
Mitt Romney, R-Mass., $24,700
Chris Dodd, D-Conn., $24,180
John McCain, R-Ariz., $7,500
Sam Brownback, R-Kan., $5,450
Joseph Biden, D-Del., $3,000
Bill Richardson, D-N.M., $1,955
Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, $750
Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., $420
Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., $400
Ron Paul, R-Texas, $210
Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., $0
Tommy Thompson, R-Wis., $0
James Gilmore, R-Va., $0
Mike Gravel, D-Alaska, $0

1. Tommy Thompson's appeal in that region is overwhelming, isn't it?
I imagine he's running especially strong in the Jewish communities there.

Our Democrats are looking good.

8. Hi, iamjoy. Thompson was addressing an audience of mostly Jews when
Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 10:31 PM by Old Crusoe
he commented that "money" had always been a part of their "tradition." I'll try to find a link for you, but the impression he left was that he associated his audience with greed, which is comprehensively unfair and incredibly stupid of him to say.

Then he apologized, and the apology came off nearly as bad as the original gaffe.

I'll try to round up a link for you.

3. My Reaction
:wow:

I'm an Edwards girl, and I really thought NY was lost. In fact, it seems like a lot of the time the media wants us to think the contest is between Clinton and Obama - never mind Edwards or even say, Richardson.

I mean, if you want to go by resume, Richardson is probably one of the most qualified (if not the most) qualified candidate we've got.

But getting elected is about more than a resume.

9. Just a thought on Obama... I think he's very impressive.
He has done remarkably, historically well in fundraising so far, and it's not even the second half of the year yet.

I think people who are trying desperately to count him out of this race have another think comin'.

14. Where? West of Buffalo, NY and east of the Niagara River?
Edited on Tue Apr-17-07 11:29 PM by mtnsnake
This race is between Obama and Hillary, but Edwards has an outside shot. Obama will overtake them all and run away with it in the end.

I agree they're both great candidates, though, as is Clinton. Gonna be a heck of a ride.

6. He also has raised the most money in Iowa, Indiana, Texas, SC, Alabama, and Washington
These are just the states that I know of and he presumably also led the field in North Carolina.

Western New Yorkers also know what it's like to be on the downside of opportunity.
