Pet food recall: Stunning news
http://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2007/04/pet-food-recall-stunning-news.html

The most recent pet food to be recalled is Natural Balance, a highly-regarded premium product recommended by animal nutritionists and dog trainers. The company, founded by actor Dick Van Patten, is known for using expensive ingredients such as duck, lamb, fresh chicken and venison.

I fed this product to my own fearsome hound for years, and she did quite well on it; I've never hesitated to recommend it. The specific kibble I purchased was not among the recalled products.

1. We feed our cats Natural Balance, and I will continue to do so.
The cat food we use is not affected by this recall.

2. This "highly regarded product" is merely formulated to meet
AAFCO standards. It has undergone no feeding trials to demonstrate nutrient bioavailability or digestibility.

Not sure who would hold it in high regard. Certainly not anyone who knows squat about pet nutrition.

Aside from that, the curious part of this is that the RICE PROTEIN CONCENTRATE is what had melamine contamination. I hope this doesn't mean we're in for a whole 'nother round of recalls due to this new source of contamination......

6. If you haven't "met" Kestrel before,
she is a vet, and she has been following the recalls very carefully. If you go to DUs pet forum, you will find a good many threads where she posts dietary advise and "no-nos."

4. I had switched over to Natural Balance with Venison & Brown Rice
last month because of all the recalls. I thought this food would be safe. One of my dogs has an allergy in which he would scratch himself raw. After eating this dog food, he stopped scratching. Now, to find another food that will keep his allergy at bay. And both my dogs loved it. My Rottweiler is a very picky eater and would quite often only eat half of her food. With Natural Balance, she licks the bowl clean.
