Dear xxxx,
As we celebrate Earth Day, we face a unique moment to focus on the tremendous challenge posed by global climate change.
I have no doubt in my mind, heart, or gut that this is the most pressing environmental issue of our time. Here's the bottom line: within the next decade, if we don't deal with global warming, our children and grandchildren will have to deal with global catastrophe.
Unfortunately, the White House and many in Congress continue to ignore the science and resist taking the necessary action to avoid the impacts of climate change on our environment, our health, our economy and our security.
The good news is that individuals and organizations all around the country are fighting to address the challenges they see in their local communities. And they are taking this fight to Washington, D.C.
One of these groups is the Earth Day Network. Founded by the organizers of the first Earth Day in 1970, EDN promotes environmental citizenship and year-round progressive action worldwide. Their international network reaches over 15,000 organizations in 174 countries, and more than a half billion people participate in their campaigns every year.
I invite you to visit their website at www.earthday.net to connect with this online community and send a strong message to Congress about the urgency of taking action to address global climate change.
http://www.earthday.net/Next week, Earth Day Network volunteers, including environmental and civil rights leaders from across the country, will hand-deliver your statements to my colleagues in the Senate and to your House Representatives here in Washington.
This Earth Day, there's nothing more important you can do than to speak up -- loudly. Let's stop being the denier of global warming that endangers the Earth. Let's give our people back the truth, and let's give the world back its future.
Thank you,
John Kerry
