Reid To Bush: If You Come After Us, We'll Hit Back Every Bit As Aggressively
By Greg Sargent | bio

Okay, here's some color from inside the meeting today at the White House between President Bush and Congressional leaders about what to do to resolve the impasse over Iraq.

A source familiar with the meeting -- at which no compromise of any kind was reached, though Speaker Nancy Pelosi said publicly today that it had been "productive" -- shares a few interesting tidbits. First, the source says, Bush bristled and was taken aback when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid compared the current situation to Vietnam; he also appeared irked by those who said the war couldn't be won.

Second, according to the source, Reid told Bush that he understood that the White House would come after Congressional Dems after the veto of the bill with everything they had; Reid vowed to respond every bit as aggressively.

"Reid talked about a recent conversation he had with a retired general where they talked about the similarities between the current situation and Vietnam," the source relates. "He talked about how the President and Secretary of Defense knew that the war was lost but continued to press on at the cost of thousands of additional lives lost."

"The analogy to Vietnam appeared to touch a nerve with the President. He appeared a little sensitive to it," the source continued. "And he clearly didn't like to hear people in the room say that the war couldn't be won militarily."

More: "Reid made it clear to the Presidenet that he understood that the President and Vice President after the veto would come after him and Speaker Pelosi with everything they have. Reid said that he and Pelosi would respond just as aggressively. He said he was convinced that they were on the right side of the issue."

Tough stuff. This isn't meant to be a comprehensive account; just a bit of color. We're trying to get more -- if we do, you'll be the first to know.

And he still strikes me as too cautious by half.

Of course, the entire party strikes me as too cautious by half -- to the extent that we could lose the slim advantage gained in 2006 because progressives will become dispirited and independents don't like to vote for weaklings.

I'm ready for Reid and Pelosi, et al, to stir some serious shit and fling a few bucketfuls at Georgie.

27. Stealthy enough to be totally invisible, I'd say
I agree wholeheartedly.

We've already got a Constitutional Crisis on slow boil on the back burner. That started about the minute the Dems took over Congress. We are NOT going to get thru these next 2 years without it coming to a full boil UNLESS Congress lets him continue to get away with shit. My advice is: LANCE that boil, let's get it on, already. Pick your best (most winnable) battle and GO FOR IT.

39. I think a lot of us get impatient with them, but
we have to remember that they've got to follow certain procedures, etc. in order to get anything done. And without a veto-proof majority, it's tough. And it's a lot easier to tear something down (like * does) than to build something back up again (Congressional Dems).

47. It should not be progressives and independents that you need to
worried about. If they are smart enough to be one or the other they are going to be smart enough to stay the course in 08. Yes, we would all like to storm in with guns blazing and take over but that is not how a democracy works. A democracy works by rule of law and that means gathering evidence and convincing the people. The more people we convince the better so the committees are taking their time to uncover as much as they can. We also do not have the majority that is needed in the Senate and sometimes even the House as we can see by this veto. If we could override the veto he probably would not even try.

Also
Time is a factor. How does Bush create a situation beneficial for the him and the GOP around the time of the 2008 elections? I am sure Harry and Nancy are aware of that and are working to counteract that.

38. Let's all make sure he has plenty of calcium supplement, 'eh?
If you can, tomorrow, and/or the next few days, try to make a call to his office (note the convenient TOLL FREE Capitol Hill switchboard numbers in my sig line below) and give him an "attaboy" and your support. Buttress his backbone by making sure his staff knows we're behind him. I think he and Pelosi need constant reminding, and reinforcing, that THIS is what we worked our asses off for last year, to make sure they could grab back the reins of power. And now that they do have those reins of power in hand, we damned well expect them to use 'em. Remind him that the public, the polls, the growing opposition to this damned war - all are on HIS SIDE. NOT bush's.

If he thinks we don't care, HE WON'T, EITHER.

48. I for one do not think that she will be the one to call for impeachment .
First, we need to impeach cheney, which may start soon and then *ss. But can you imagine what the spin would be if she starts it? She is next in line for the office. That would be the spin if she acts too eager. Others will offer the bills and get them voted in. Then we can move "Polosi for President 2007".

No deals.

Don't budge.

Don't blink.

Don't sway.

Stand firm for what is right and face down the enemy. It's long, long overdue.

I hope we aren't going to be let down. And isn't that a statement for our Dem leaders? We can't really be certain what the hell they'll do!!

It would be nice if they saw signs everywhere in D.C. on their way to work every morning:

"Remember November 2006. Remember why you are where you are.

53. Oh, They Have a Lot
The bill will be passed. Bush will veto it. The veto will hold. Then Bush will put on a full-court press over Congress denying funding for the troops and order them to provide funding without a withdrawal clause.

It a game of political perceptions. The media gives Bush way too much credibility, and he has the old US pride nationalism behind him. The Democrats will have to play this one just right.

I don't think they have any other choice, but I can see Bush winning this round and eventually getting funding without a timetable.
